New LCD monitor problem

I bought a new monitor and i have a old computer but it has win xp on it.
When i go to display settings and it set to 1024/768 i get lines running through
the monitor Diagonally.
If i leave it at 800/600 it is fine.. but the display is very large.
Do i need a new video card.... I may just leave it at 800/600 setting. for now.
I did get some software with the monitor , but i am not sure if the drivers got downloaded.

The resolution of the video card should be set to match the native resolution of
the monitor. Either you installed (not downloaded) the monitor drivers are you didn't.
It's fairly important that you do so. We can't tell you if you did or not.

Display Properties, Settings, Advanced, Adapter, List all Modes.
It won't hurt anything to run it at 800x600, it's just horrible to look at.

Thanks for your help..I went to settings and selected 1024 /768 60 hrz
I can now set the monitor at the same with no lines running through.
I really dont see the difference other than now the printing is alot smaller.
The color looks about the same.
Thanks

If you mean the text on the screen, of course it looks smaller.
The text has a given fixed size in pixels but the high resolution
monitor setting has more pixels than the previous 800x600
setting, so everything displayed on it uses a smaller proportion
of the total pixels now available.
Conversely, the monitor can now display larger pages with more
content on them.

Regardless of the screen resolution, if you go to Appearance and Themes in the Control
Panel, and click on Display Properties, you can reset the desktop Font Size. There
are three choices: Normal, Large, and Extra Large.
My monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 215TW 21" monitor with a native resolution of
1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop Font Size set at Extra Large.

Hi
Thanks i will try that.. I have the Samsung Syncmaster 920WM model 19 inch.
Its says the resolution is 1440x900 but when i look at adapters, i dont have that
number.
I have 1600x1200 1280x1024 1152x 864 and the one i am using 1024x768
I guess the reason i cannot choose 1440x900 is becuase of my video card???
I really like the picture and color i am getting.. well i went from a 17 inch CTR
montor that was 10 yrs old..
I could never go back to that>>
Peter you have a nice monitor there.. I thought about going bigger, but really this
19inch is great. I am really happy with the Samsung model.
What do you think about the magic bright>> I dont do games or anything so for me
i would probably just leave it where it is.
One thing i want to ask>> You can hook these monitor up analog or digital.
Mine is hooked up analog and when i shut the computer off before the monitor shuts
off there is a box at the top left and it will flash analog and then digital, it
will do this a few times before it shuts down
You think this is normal and does your do that. To hook up digital i suppose again
you need to upgrade the video card?
Are u running digital and is there much difference?

Hi Rick
I thought you had resolved your resolution issue following Ricer46's advice. For
a full explanation of screen resolution go here
You should have the driver for your model on the CD that came with it. That will
give you the correct resolution of 1440x900.
What do I think of Magic Bright? Not much. I set my colours manually. The factory
settings on Samsungs are usually R50% G50% B50%. I reset mine to R66% G39% B40% which
is as good as it gets on my model. You can check your colour range here.
But before recallibrating the RGB settings make sure your brightness is at 100% and
contrast at 25%. Then after RGB callibration reset your brightness/contrast to give
pure white and black. If you do make a hash of things go back to the factory settings.
But the old adage applies, if it ain't broke don't fix it, so if you are happy
with your colours as you say you are then leave the settings as they are.
I have both cables attached, analogue and digital, but you probably won't get the
BIOS readings at start up on digital. I have run digital but with my old card I reverted
to analogue. The difference is a marginal one of speed (a few microseconds) since
what you are seeing is digital (your video card converts the digital signal to analogue
and an LCD monitor reconverts it back to digital on the fly - a digital connection
simply cuts this out).

HI Peter
I am quite satisfied with the color, like i said going from a 10 yr old CTR to this,
is a very big difference.
I can rememeber when we switch from an TV Antenna to Sateilite TV.. Not even in
the same league.
I thought my resolution problems are taken care of. I cannot see how i can get the
best out of this monitor at 1440x900 if my video card doesn't have that setting.
But really 1024x768 looks good to me.My first post was becuase i was getting lines
running through the screen, and now that the adapter is set to 1024x768 its all
is good.
I forgot to mention my computer is outdated.I have a newer computer here, but for
some reason can't seem to part with this old one.

When the monitor is set to operate at its native resolution, there's still a whole
new level of viewing quality that you are missing out on.

Widescreen LCD monitors don't work well with old video cards, because of the unsupported
resolutions. If you have a AGP slot tho, a new Vid card that has the proper resolutions
are not that expensive.
