Slow, slow

My computer is taking up to ten minutes or longer to get onto the Internet. I've
checked with my ISP and they say the problem is not with them. My modem is fine.
I've done a virus and also a spyware check. Although there were some minor bugs on
my system, they have been removed. I've defragged my system too.

How can I work out just what is wrong and how do I repair it? Is there anybody that
can please help me with this? Thanks

Has is always been slow or has it ran normal before? Here is all the steps i use to keep my pc running like new. 1-Run disc cleanup. You can find it under start-->all programs-->accessories-->system tools. 2-Clear your browsing history. Go to start-->control panel-->Internet options-->Under browsing history click delete. 3-Run Cleanup! Its free and you can find it here. http://www.majorgeeks.com/CleanUp_d4895.html 4-Run Ad-aware. Free download here. http://www.filehippo.com/download_ad-aware/3979/ 5-Run Spybot s&d. Free download here. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html 6-Run a virus scan, which you have done. 7-Run hijackthis.m google it for download. Be sure to save a log file and copy and paste the log file here. http://www.hijackthis.de/ and it will tell you if there is any bad files. 8-Instead of the built in defragger, Run this one called diskeeper. Its only a trial version. Download it here. http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp Well thats all i can think of. I do all those steps once a week and my pc still runs very good after 3 years old. Hope it helps.

Thank you very much for all of that, Tony. I will start to work my way through it
right now. It will take some time. And the answer to your question as to whethere
or not my computer was running slow previously, the answer is no.

Thanks again.

Is that dial up? Pick up the handset and dial the number. If the server is answering
(not busy signals for ten minutes) but you can't connect, remove and re-install all
of your protocols.

have you recently loaded any new software on the machine? What anti-virus program are you using? If you are using Norton, or MacAfee, that is the bulk of your problem. If you use norton or macAfee, uninstall it, and download a copy of AVG 8.0 FREE version. (google for it)

then run auslogics boot speed, its a trial, you can uninstall it afterwards, you may need a reimage, if the system is that slow.
