Automatic Updates Problem

I just got a new pc and I have a security alert saying that automatic updates are
not enabled.

When I press 'turn on automatic updates' it says it can't be changed and that I should
go to 'system' in the control panel and turn it on there, but I just get the same
message saying it cant be changed.

I have also tried turning it on in the 'services' window, setting the startup type
as automatic, but it just seems to be permanently disables.

anyone have any ideas?

thanks

Look in the Windows XP Discussion Forum for a thread of: Microsfot Software Distribution 3.0. I found out how to permanently turn off Microsoft Updates and it is listed in there how I did it. I can't remember. As a matter of fact I went to Updates the other day to get something and I couldn't so I just skipped it.

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1198424819 Here's the path for the Microsoft Software Distribution Service 3.0 thread where I eventually state how to turn of automatic updates permanently. Check your system to see if any of these things are done and reverse them.

I know you don't want to disable it. You want to make it work. I'm just saying look at how I disabled mine permanently and go to these places in your computer and see what I checked and you uncheck it or whatever.
