Im about to purchase the original Windows XP and was wondering if it would be ok
without SP2. If not, is it possible to download it? Or would I have to buy it?

XP works fine without SP2, but SP2 fixes numerous bugs and security holes (mostly
in IE).
Sure you can download SP2, and its free. Better still, though, slipstream it so you
install XP and SP2 at the same time, avoids lots of issues.
Search this forum to find out how to do this.

Awesome thanks. One thing though, if you look on futureshop.ca it appears they sell
SP2 for $130. Or am I just misreading it? Search "Windows XP" on futureshop for
info.

I'm only saying why would you buy the original version of XP with no SP2 and then
have to slipstream SP2 into it, when you can just buy XP with SP2 already included
in it??? There isn't extra money involved for having SP2 included.

XP is for sale not SP2 by itself. The ad is to let customers know which version of
XP will be delivered.

It says "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade SP2" is $130 but it also says
"Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition With Service Pack 2" is $270. Whats the difference?

The OEM version is cheaper, no manual or anything. just cd and cd key to activate,
no support from microsoft. Upgrade version is when you have a earlier version of
windows already installed, its just a little more money than the OEM version, includes
support from microsoft and cdkey to activate. The retail version has manuals and
support from Microsoft, basically for new systems. Most people just buy the OEM
version to save money.

Upgrade versions are cheaper. Installing it requires proof that you have an earlier
version of Windows. I guess the upgrade version is like the OEM version in that
you can only run it on one computer. If you get a new computer, you need to purchase
another license. But that's only a guess. The one for $270 is probably the full
retail version that you can switch to a newer computer in the future.
Service packs are free. The latest is SP3 which is what I'm running. Indeed I did
slipstream mine. Autostreamer makes it fairly easy.

OEM XP CD's are the CDs that a manufacture uses, but they can be purchased by anyone.
They are a Full install CD, upgrade installs can't be done by the OEM Disks. Microsoft
doesn't offer any phone support with them either, but who cares. Just use Google
to find out more information about it, or on what slipstreaming means.

You are mis-reading FutureShop's website !
The $130 item is for Windows XP with SP2 . . . . sold as an upgrade from a previous
version of Windows eg Windows 98.
It is NOT an upgrade of XP to XP SP2 which is and always has been free :-)))

there is no any problem whether u buy xp with or without sp2, but after installing
it u can updated ur xp to sp3 directly from MS website. go to tools tab in IE and
click on windows update. it takes hardly 1 hour to update XP.

Slipstreaming is the term used to integrate a service pack into XP and burn a new
XP install CD or DVD. If you do this, then when you install XP from the new disc,
the service pack will already be installed.
Otherwise if you install XP from an install disc that doesn't have the latest service
pack, you will need to install the service pack after the install. Either way works
though.
I don't know how difficult it is for the average person to slipstream. If you are
interested, here are two links:

Check out Vishal's message. Is that true? Is there no need to slipstream?

Any idea why one is so much more than the other? Does it have to do with the OEM
disk?

Correct. There's probably no need to slipstream. You can install the service packs
later.
There is one thing different about SP3. You can't install it on a running XP that
has no service packs installed. The XP must have at least SP1 installed before you
install SP3. So if your XP install CD has no service packs on it, you need to install
SP1 or SP2 before installing SP3.
If you slipstream, you can slipstream SP3 directly on XP with no other service packs
installed.

xp then u can upgrade it with sp3. i think there is no need to burn a cd. not even
xp, u can upgrade any version of windows to latest service pack. bt for that u need
a genuine windows.

I personally don't think any of the service packs are necessary unless you're using
Microsoft IE as your browser.
I use Seamonkey and deleted all the service packs and see no problems so far.
