Aha. You may have two different partitions on the one disk. When the shop
installed XP Home on it, they may have done it to a second partition so that your
original XP Pro installation was still there. I would expect that when you first
switch the PC on, you are presented with a boot menu which allows you to boot from
either partition i.e. XP Pro or XP Home. Obviously this will confuse the stuff we
are doing on the other thread! If you are looking on partition c: and the stuff we
need to fix is on d: it could get very silly indeed! When the machine is booted,
open a command prompt window and type in "set" (without the quotes) then press return.
This will present a list of information. One of the things listed will be the word
"systemdrive" and it will be followed by the letter c: or d: - we need to know which
one we are talking about. Cheers. Spexx.

I don't see where I could choose either partition when it is booting up. Can you
elaborate? I went to Run and typed in set and it said Windows cannot find set.
I keep all my documents and music on the d: drive (partition). I didn't even realize
it had a Windows directory in there until I was cleaning out old stuff a few months
ago. Duh me. Sending boot log on the other thread.

In the Run window, enter "cmd" (without the quotes) and it opens a command window.
Type "set" (without the quotes) in that command window. Cheers. Spexx.

What am I supposed to be looking for in cmd set? I'll keep it open. Everything
in there refers to c: and I don't see d: at all. Something bothering though...it
says OS-Windows_NT. I have the unopened Windows XP Home I bought that the guy said
he used his disk but my registration number. What is Windows NT?

Good-oh. We are booted from C: then. Windows XP is based on an earlier "flavour"
which was called Windows NT (New Technology, allegedly) and they still use that as
the OS identifier. No worries. Cheers. Spexx.

So, in case asked, do I have Windows NT or do I have Windows XP Home?

You have XP for sure. I can't confirm from what I have seen if it is Home
or Pro though. The windows folder on d: might be where the shop placed your old XP
Pro files, but we would have to ask them. Cheers. Spexx.

The guy went out of business. My reboot and error screen came up again so it's not
fixed. I think you are right about overheating and needing cleaning. I just lifted
it a lot higher off the ground because I see there are holes under this case. I
also moved it out from the wall where one fan was against the wall and the other
fan in the back was against the wall. I looked in and there is dust. I'll clean
it out and also make sure the air conditioning is blowing while I am using the computer
and see if all this helps. Don't know what to do about that css-dvp.sys. I deleted
it but it's still there.

From what you just said, I think overheating must be the cause of the rebooting etc.
I explained about the .sys file over on the other thread - it has not been deleted
from the one place that it needed to be i.e. c:\windows\system32\drivers folder.
You said you had deleted it from two other places. Cheers. Spexx.

Because css-dvp.sys is not in there. Just looked again and in d: and did a search
of both and it's not there. Only shows up in the boot file. I cleaned out the inside
of the computer and Really lifted it up off the ground. 4 fans in there and one
is underneath, hence the brown spot on the rug. Had a nice clean boot.

What a coincidence. I am talking with someone else on another thread about a "driver"
which we know is loading from the bootlog, but cannot see the file on the disk -
exactly the same thing! In his case, I'm fairly sure that we are looking at a rootkit
infection due to other obvious symptoms i.e. taking an age to startup. In your case
I am not so sure since the original symptoms of rebooting etc have been cured with
a good clean-out of the PC to prevent overheating. I am still suspicious that you
have something bad lurking on your PC, so please monitor it for any unusual behaviour.
If you also have a rootkit infection there, be aware that cleaning these things up
is not for the faint-hearted! Cheers. Spexx.

Yeah, I have the feeling this is not the end of my problem. Funny thing is I compared
the first bootlog against the second. Only other difference is the first listed:
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\ipnat.sys. And in the second boot
log is is completely gone and not listed! Searching the internet it is a Windows
file and not suspicious and should not be deleted. I checked and it is still in
the drivers folder.

I am researching my first driver that didn't boot NDProxy.sys and I find people
complaining about slow or stalled starts mention this file. I'm going to follow
your thread with the guy. I wonder if his bootlog shows this file not loading.

Actually, his log shows the driver both loading and not loading, just as your does,
but I'm afraid that it is irrelevant and quite common. Similar things are to be found
in my bootlog too, but no suspicious drivers! Cheers. Spexx.

Yeah, I just found that out. No big deal. Always the same drivers that don't load,
except css-dvp.sys. I see why you jumped down to that one right off! Thanks for
all your help. I'll wait and see if I get the error again and if so, maybe remove
the only recent added programs...Avast antivirus; Comodo Safesurf; Comodo Firewall
Pro; MobiPocket Reader 6.2.

I would advise leaving those in place and getting rid of the Authentium anti-virus
using Add/Remove programs in Control Panel. Avast! is excellent, you don't need the
Authentium stuff and they might well interfere with each other. I'm glad that the
original problems have gone away now that the problems with overheating have been
addressed. Cheers. Spexx.

Okay I'll leave that stuff. However Authentium is not in Add or Remove Programs.
It's just in a folder in Common Files . Maybe I never even used it. I can't remember
I tried so many registry/virus/system check-type files which are still all over my
computer I don't know what I should keep. For now I just renamed the folder. I
still have Combofix; qoobox (?); fixwareout; autoruns; BartPE. Can't remember how
any of them work. I'll deal with them later. Did you see my post about removing
all my restore points? I'm back to the computer rebooting unnecessarily.

Hmm. Leave the housekeeping until the problem is sorted. Mental note to re-enable

I re-enabled System Restore and made a restore point. When you disable it, it wipes
out my one and only restore point. What if we try something else and it makes it
worse? I would have no restore point to go back to. What do you think. Also, isn't
there any program to analyze my hardware?

Bouncing across these two threads is making me travel-sick :-) You did the right
thing re-enabling system restore. Now that pesky .sys file has gone we want a decent
restore point as a baseline. Cheers. Spexx.
