Missing Safely Remove Hardware Icon

I've recently installed an Epson All-In-One printer/scanner (USB connection), and after restarting Windows the Safely Remove Hardware icon has disappeared from the System Tray. I've tried Customize in the Taskbar - Properties but no matter what I do there, it won't reappear. When I run sys32/rundll32 and stop one of the devices the icon reappears in the System Tray. Is this an XP bug?

You say that the icon has disappeared so it used to be there... what hardware was
it associated with originally? And is that hardware still functioning properly without
the icon displaying?

The "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is normally associated with hot-swappable serial devices such as USB drives. The HDD is also listed as it is a SATA drive. All the associated devices work properly despite the absence of the system tray icon.

It sounds to me that it's just some kind of glitch in XP as you had suggested in
your original post. If all appears to be functioning properly I wouldn't worry about
it. But that's just me, I'm sure someone else may chime in. Good luck!

Clive,

Plug in a hot swappable device & see if the Icon returns. It's possible the Icon
is just hidden due to lack of use.

On my system the Icon only appears when a removeable device has been plugged into the USB port.

The SATA HDD drive of course is permanently plugged in, and I use USB drives regularly.

Thanks Bob for that link, I will have a look at it, although today I installed SP3 and so far it seems to have resolved the issue. The icon is back.

I have always understood that the icon only appears when a USB (or other removeable) storage device is plugged in. I have a Bluetooth device and a Wireless networking device both plugged in to USB ports and the icon does not appear. As soon as I plug a USB flash drive in, the icon appears. If I remove it safely (using the icon) then the icon goes away. In fact if I just rip the flash drive out, the icon goes away. This is normal, expected behaviour. Cheers. Spexx.

Clive,

I'm pleased to hear you have it back.

I was kind of hoping to hear back if the Kelly' Korner tool worked. The Icon is not
specifically mentioned and I can't try it cause I'm not on XP Machine.

There'll be another time.
