Windows XP Service Pack 3

Hi, I just visited Windows Update and noticed that Service Pack 3 is available. Apparently
it's not an Automatic Update from Microsoft. I haven't heard much about it. Has anyone
installed it and is it recommended to do so. I'm looking for some feedback for good
or bad experiences with the update. I remember the horror stories when Service Pack
2 came out. Thanks!!
eMachines T3395
Sempron 3000+
704 MBs Ram
Windows XP Service Pack 2(up to date with all current updates)

I have tried it and uninstalled it from all 4 of my XP boxes, SP2 had some valid
additions that were beneficial, SP3 seems to be a different story..most advanced
users would recommend not installing it...

There are various issues with it, especially with anti-virus software which must
be fully disabled while SP3 is installing. It has been available for quite some time
now, but I don't want to break my machine! Leave it alone until you have researched
it in depth, particularly with regard to interactions with your exisitng software.
Google "Symantec
problem SP3" and weep. Cheers. Spexx.

Norm,
More specific to your eMachine, SP3 presents problems for OEM systems running AMD
processors.
As I understand it the problem was created by the OEM's not M$. I have not heard
of a fix for it being available. You may find more on this by cruising the previous
Posts on this forum or on www.computing.net.
Google might be another good source.

Thank you Bob. I'm glad I just didn't go ahead and install it. I guess it's always
good to research it before jumping in, thanks!

I've installed it dozens of times on various PCs with out one single problem from
it yet. There are a couple known issues, such as the AMD processor issue, which
is not an issue with SP3, but an issue with how the manufacturer created the installation
of Windows that you have. I did come across that problem one time so far, and it
took 5 minutes to fix.
I have added it to my list of standard "required" updates, before a PC leaves my
doors, and have not had any issue, nor any returns for problems caused by SP3.
Keep in mind that all the machines I touch are professionally inspected, thoroughly
for hardware and software problems, BEFORE installing any updates. And, it is my
belief that the problems that people are claiming to have with SP3 are in fact a
problem that already existed on the PC that has been compounded.
On the other hand, SP3 makes very little change to the computer, and if you have
SP2 with all current updates, you aren't getting much of anything else by installing
SP3. But, this is also why there is an extremely low risk of SP3 actually doing
any harm, if your PC is already in good shape. SP2 made huge changes. SP3 makes
virtually none.
In my opinion, you would not receive any benefits from installing SP3 because your
machine is already all up to date. However, it is also my opinion, that if you have
no reason to believe there are any other significant problems on your PC, then it
would not hurt to install SP3. It is strictly optional at this point, and completely
up to you.

You're welcome Norm.
One last item which, unfortunately I did not Bookmark, M$ has some instructions to
be followed, prior to installing SP3. I've seen it several times but?

I have it installed on my four computers without any problems. They all have Intel
CPUs.

There is one thing different about SP3. You can't install it on a running XP that
currently has no service packs installed.
However you can slipstream it on XP that has no service packs installed.
