Question about 'How do I skip the Product Activation in Windows XP?'

I have a question about How
do I skip the Product Activation in Windows XP?:
Approx 1 1/2 yrs ago I purchased a new Compaq Presario laptop with Windows XP installed
on it. Just recently I installed SP3 and my husband was deleting some old stuff
in an attempt to free up hard driver space.
Then out of the blue I start getting a message telling me that my copy of windows
is not activated. I fear an important file may have been accidently deleted.
Also, I did not receive any operating discs when I bought the computer.
Can anyone tell me how to correct this problem?

You don't have to skip the activation. as a matter of facts, Microsoft will in your
case give you and guide you through the process if your operating program was indeed
pre-installed when you bought the computer. That said, they will ask you for the
number that came with the original disc when you first setup the machine. It should
be on the back of the machine next to the Windows 3D logo or on the disc supplied
by Compaq. I know it's not always easy to deal with Bill's juggernaut, but the process
I went through with them was relatively painless and I now have access to all the
updates available from Windows update site. Your copy MUST be genuine to start with.
After re-reading your message before posting I noticed that you did not get a re-formatting
disc with your Compaq. I would contact Compaq to get one then go on with the process
of activating your copy of Windows
Good luck

Go online and activate it.
You should have no problems.
If it doesn't activate online, follow the prompts for the over the phone activation.

As an item of general knowledge, it's worth keeping in mind that if ever you have
to re-instal Windows (any version), it doesn't matter whose disc you use... the only
thing that matters is whether you have a legitimate licence. As long as you enter
your own licence code, the plastic is irrelevant.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.. I won't answer as you might think I am flaming you again,
so I will let someone else explain why you are wrong if they care to...

This information is incorrect. No XP key works on all XP installation discs. Secondly,
using someone else's license is not okay. Ignoring the legality, what if the license
key ends up getting blacklisted from overuse? Then you're in the same boat...
