Windows XP explorer process performance when inside a VPN

Due to security measures I have to connect to a VPN to access our servers. Once I
get
connected to the VPN, my local explorer process does not start immediately. It takes
about 45 seconds to even show the start menu items or for that matter anything related
to
my local file system. I'm pretty sure that it tries to search something over by local
network
before showing me the menu items or folders.
However this does not happen while I connect to the VPN from home.
I have a Windows XP professional SP 3. What could be the reason?
How can one find as to what the explorer process is trying to do?
Thank you.

Try to discount and reconnect a few times. You may want make sure the system does
not try to use a network resource before the connection is good. This can mean you
will have to start some things manually. A real pain.
Also, is this a Cisco VPN?
There are too many possible solutions:

Check this:
Control Panel
Folder Options
View
Uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers"

No affect at all. It just doesn't go looking for things. Anything you have specifically
setup will still work correctly.
