McAfee Install problem or Not ?

I had trouble recently with a McAfee update on my computer, and I am not sure if it was a McAfee problem or system problem?? Over the weekend McAfee started to download an update. I left my computer and came back 6 hours later and it was still downloading, with my cable connection I have never had such a long down load before. When I tried to turn my computer off, everything froze, and I had to hit the “off” switch. When I re-booted, I no longer had internet access, no matter what I tried to do. A while back I had a similar problem and removed/reinstalled McAfee and I was fine. So, I uninstalled McAfee, and could now get back on the internet. But when I went to McAfee.com to download my active subscription, I am unable to log in to my account. It lets me type my name and password, hit enter, and nothing happens. I tried going back to the main page and download the free trial offer, or even hit a “buy” button to purchase and nothing happens. When I went in to my Yahoo mail acct everything had changed, fonts size was huge. I went to C-Net to try another virus scan, and nothing would download. I tried re-booting and restoring an older date when the system was working fine, but the screen to choose a date had no date selections. I wanted to try and reinstall/fix IE, through remove/add a program, but when I highlighted IE, it didn't give me the option to remove. Right now I have no way of scanning for a virus, or installing my subscription. I am on my work computer, and had no problem getting in to my McAfee account. Any ideas ? Windows XP Home edition

You may have a backup that you don't know about, in System Restore. That's the first
thing that comes to mind.

Hmm..also, look for files created after the update began. That might be a clue.

I went to System Restore, and it came up blank. I also tried to use the search for files/folders option to look for files created by date, but when the box opened up there were no search options, just the stupid dog. I tried to buy a version of registry mechanic 8.0 to check my registry, but after I entered all my information ans tried to proceed to chekout, it never opened the next page. Anything else I should try ?? Thanks.

Instead of the dumb built-in XP search utility, I greatly prefer agentransack. It's
freeware. I forget the site name where I got it; if you can't find it, let me know
and I will send you my copy.

I was trying to download agentransack, and was having more problems. I ended up going to Microsoft and download IE7 again, after that everything is fine. No problems accessing any sites, my system restore is working. Everything back to normal. I guess IE was damaged when the McAfee download hung, and I had to turn off my computer. I appreciate your help, and the tip on agenransack!!

I have 3 general observations on "web-stuff" in general and your situation in particular:

1 I'm a real big fan of the Mozilla products--Firefox, Thunderbird (email), the FTP
client (I forget the name), etc.

2. I'm very fond of AgentRansack, and now that you're back in business you might
want to consider it.

3. Computing has become horribly complex. Ultimately, every computer user has to
develop some expertise of his or her own to keep the computer running properly--the
folks who deliver "tech support" all too often have no real in-depth knowledge and
work by cookbook. (Maybe everyone should consider getting such a cookbook of their
own.)
