System32 missing or corrupt- No setup CD ROM
Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 1:21 am Posted by Felicity Wilde

My computer wil not start is saying that System32\config\system is corrupt or missing
and I need setup CD ROM to repair. I was given the computer second hand and so don't
have this CD. Is there any other way to fix this.I have anything important on an
external hard drive so don't mind if I have to reinstall everything.

Basically you really don't have a legal operating System. You'll need to buy one.

How can you say that, Ricer46?
He has a working computer with a working Windows installed. Why do you assume that
it is illegal? Not having the CD doesn't make the installation illegal. You have
no indication that the installation CD has been used more then once, other than assuming
that this MAY be the case.
Stop pushing the MS envelope to the extent of fear-mongering.

Try reading his post again. I have assumed very little.

Felicity,
There is no way to know, at this time, whether your OS is "LEGAL" or not. A lost
CD is not conclusive of Pirated Software.
Post back with some info on your system, Make & model Number would be helpful. If
it is OEM you may only need to find or purchase new Restore CD'S.
Some OEM provide them free, some at nominal cost. If not OEM there are still ways
to recover your OS so you can determine if you need to Purchase WinXP.
Look on your Computer Case for a label with the Product Code. If you find one, write
it down for easy access.

Is everyone failing to notice this statement?
"I was given the computer second hand..."
That's not the same as losing the CD.

No, didn't fail to notice that statement, only didn't interprete it as the basis
of anything illegal. This could have been Daddy's old computer and Daddy may not
be very well organized.
It is Ricer46 who fails to notice that not everyone is automatically a pirate by
default.
My appologies to Felicity... I didn't look at your name when I labeled you "he".

I did not accuse her being a pirate, but I suspect there is a good chance that whoever
gave her the computer was less than ethical. And I've never once accused anyone here
of pirating software.

Felicity - you really need a technician to fix this issue (straightforward job for
someone like me) - I'm assuming you're a competent computer user, not a techie. Said
technician should have access to requisite resources (for me, that basically means
a bartpe Cd - you boot from it and then restore the registry hives from a recent
backup kept by system restore (assuming you haven't disabled that) in system volume
information folder.

No I did not fail to notice the 2nd hand part. In fact 3 of my systems were donated
to me (2nd Hand, if you Will) for the very simple reason that the previous owners
wanted a new system, had lost the CDs' and didn't want to mess with them.
Two were OEM so I located new Restore CD's. No problemo. The third had a full Retail
copy of XP PRO, but I simply found an OEM copy(legal, from an upgrader) and changed
the product code from Retail to OEM. Yes it's Activated.
Now you tell me which one is a Pirated Copy of windows.
We don't know from the info provided, but the poster is probably afraid to proceed
because of the accusation.

It is definitely a legal version and am a little upset at the insinuation that it
is not. The computer was purchased by my brother with Windows XP installed. He then
moved overseas and gave it to me to use whilst away. He cannot access his stuff while
overseas so I can not get a copy of the CD he was given when he purchased the machine.

Thank you to those of you that answered my question without assuming that because
I am not terribly computer savvy that I must be a pirate. Because I am not that savvy
I wouldn't even know how to pirate something let alone want to do it. I will take
my PC to a technician who will help me sort it out as I have all the required codes
attached to a sticker on the bottom of my machine. Thank you again.

You should have stated the full story to begin with.

I guess I wasn't aware that there were people out there that automatically thought
the worst of anyone having trouple with their computer. It really wasn't any of your
buisness why I couldnt get my hands on the CD, I asked for advice on a situation
I did not understand, not to be judged by your questionable standards. It wouldn't
hurt to think positively about people as an automatic response rather than assuming
the worst.
