Yep, The drive still works ok via the DVD RAM Drive icon in My Computer but that actual drive icon that was there previously has simply disappeared! I can see the device in Device Manager and have tried uninstalling and Re-Installing and rebootong etc the device is found and installed but still no icon. Cleared out the Upper and Lower Filters from regedit and rebooted but still nothing. Any ideas? Thanks

Common Problem with a single common solution that you've already tried and as far
as I can tell, has never worked at all. The only one that I know works, is to re-install
XP from scratch. You might try disconnecting the drive, deleting it from the Device
Manager, and then hook it back up, might be re-found, but I doubt it.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the input mate! But I'm not giving up that easy. I believe that there is a solution somewhere. Granted it might be found after I take my trusty lump hammer to the motherboard but I have faith that it's out there lol

There is a Registry Edit that is pretty easy to find with Google, that makes the
Drives invisible. It doesn't disable the Drives but just makes the Drives Icon disappear.
Tweakui also has a setting to do it. You might find the Edit, and check that Registry
Key.

I don't understand what you mean. Where, other than in My Computer or using Windows Explorer (where it apparently still exists and can be used), did you have a DVD Rom drive icon, that you don't have now?

The DVD RAM drive icon appears in My Computer. There was, until a few days ago, a DVD Drive icon there as well as would be expected. This (Explorer) is the only place these icons appear is it not? I can still use the drive but the ison is gone.

Ah, that's an entirely different matter, the usual problem is not only is the drive
not there, but it doesn't work either.
But if the icons are not there, how are you using the drive? Give a complete explanation...
I fell like we're playing 20 questions.

Under 'Devices with Removable Media" I have: DVD-RAM Drive But I previously had the icon for the RAM drive and an icon for my DVDR Drive. But this has disappeared. I am able to access the contents of my drive by simply placing a CD or DVD in it and closing it, then going to the RAM drive icon and double clicking. This is NOT a serious matter but more so an annoying one and I would like to get to the bottom of it. I appreciate everyones time on this matter, thanks.

First, there is no such thing as a DVD-RAM drive. There is a DVD-ROM and a DVD-RW. It will have a single drive letter assigned to it and will be shown as one of these or some times CD-ROM or CD-RW. For instance, on my computer, I have:

Explorer does some funny things on that Rich. I have two Sony DVD-RW drives, one
is DL, the other isn't. In Device Manager they are both listed as DVD-RW, in Explorer,
one shows as a DVD-RAM Drive, the other simply as a CD Drive. They both work completely
as DVD-RW.

Thanks Ricer46, I didn't know that. Mine have always been listed correctly, though I've never had two DVD-RW drives in one machine.
