Any security blocks wireless connection

This is weird. I have an N class wireless router (Linksys WRT160N) with the latest
firmware. From my Vista laptop, it works perfectly at any security settings (I prefer
WPA2 Personal TKIP). But if I use any security settings at all on my XP laptop,
it never connects, even though I cut and paste the encryption key from the same source
file. It only works if I turn off all security, which is unacceptable.

What happens if I use any security is this: I select the network, press connect,
then enter the encryption key. A window comes up with the title "Wireless Network
Connection" with a constantly scrolling progress bar below the words "Waiting for
the network to be ready". After several minutes, the window just closes without
any error message, but without connecting, either.

The oddest thing is that the same XP laptop connects perfectly to an AT&T wireless
connection with WPA security!

What can I do?

Yeah, I have a hard time too with XP and wireless security. I am just to lazy to fix it. Anyway, here is a place to start if you have not already t read his:

Implement WPA2-Personal wireless security on a Windows XP SP2-based computer

Please post back if this does or does not help. There is more stuff like this on the Microsoft site. It is a assle for a lot of us to get it right.

Thanks, Geek9pm, for your reply. I've done everything described on the page you
linked to, but nothing has changed. Not only can't I connect with my desired network
(from a Linksys router with full WPA2 support) with WPA2, I can't connect with WPA
either (after changing the Linksys router to WPA). Which is strange considering
that I can connect fine to an AT&T wireless network that has WPA security enabled!
I can only connect to the Linksys wireless network with all security disabled.

Any other suggestions?

It wouldn't work on mine either. At the time I was trying to implement it, my searches
led me to believe that it was an XP problem. Since I only needed wireless for a couple
of months, I didn't work terribly hard to research the issue though.

I couldn't get WPA to work either, but WEP worked fine. Most Users can't get into Windows if they forget their Password, so I figured WEP was secure enough.

Rather than going bvack into the Microsft site, you may wish to tray some of the D-Link forums. There may be users who fixed the XP program and reported it on a D-link forum. Hera a a couple:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/dlink
http://www.amazon.com/tag/d-link/forum
Yes, Anazon has a D-link forum!
Thanks for giving us a try!

Have you tried to connect any other devices wirelessly to this router? Usually when I run into problems like this, it is the router. Usually doing a hard reset of the router then reprogramming solves the problem. These cheap home routers tend to freak out sometimes and do all kinds of unpredictable things.
