Try this (Win XP Pro):
Windows key + R
> type 'gpedit.msc'
> Local Computer Policy
> Computer Configuration
> Administrative Templates
> System
> Turn off Autoplay
> Enabled
> on: All Drives
...easy!

Before you start posting "solutions," you should take the time to understand how
a forum works. Answers without questions are of little value to anyone, since so
few bother to use the search tools here. The only ones who will read your "solution"
are those that don't need it. And imo, there's an even easier way.

Ricer46,
I found this thread via a Google search ("xp pro" "turn off" Autorun).
I am interested in the "even easier way." Please point me in the right direction.
I am running XP Pro SP2 (with all subsequent hot fixes) on a GamePC machine based
on a Gigabyte GZ-EP35-DS3P motherboard. It came with a Samsung DRW-S203NB CD RW
drive and a SIIG JU-91RW12-S4 7-in-1 card reader/floppy drive.
I added in an HP SCSI CD-Writer+ 9200 from a previous machine. I has been extremely
slow to load a CD recently. I have to wait until Autorun is done before I can look
at it using My Computer. I'm hoping that disabling Autorun will improve this performance.
I also read that it is wise to have Autorun disabled because there is malware that
can be installed from USB flash drives if Autorun is enabled. As I understand it,
it is wiser to explore the flash drive before electing to open any files on it.
Please share your easier way.
Thanks,
baumgrenze
