If a file won't run ...

In the past, I have had incidences where downloaded files won't run because they
are not being opened with the right programs on my system. My first question is:
How can I get my system to try the other programs which it may have in order to run
these files? My second question is: If I have a file that won't run at all on my
system because it might have an extension that is wrong or previously inheard of
on my system, what general steps or procedure should I take in order to get the thing
to work? Thanks.

do a google search of file extensions , like .img as an example
as for opening a file with another program ,just right click on the file and choose
open with and choose another program [associated with that file type ]to open it

You can use this Site to find out exactly what the File Types mean, and what Programs
use them.
