"windoms was unable to complete the disck check"

Basically I am not able to run a disk check on both my C and D drive. When I initiate
the disk check by right clicking on the drive and properties and tools and selecting
dick check and then I check both boxes off and the disk check doesn't even start,
and a message pops up saying "windoms was unable to complete the disk check". Furthermore
I am not able to run a disk defragment as well, when I initiate a disk defragment,a
message pops up saying "Disk Defragmenter could not start''. I also tried the RUN
-->CMD -->chkdsk,chkdsk /f /r, chkdsk /v but none of these techniques allowed me
to have a disk check on reboot, it would say if you would like to schedule a disk
check on reboot and I would type in Y for yes but when it restarts, the disk check
screen doesnt even appear. Your help would be much appreacited in this matter and
one additional information that may be useful is that when i went to disk management
in the control panel under admistrative tools, it says both drives are healthy and
functioning properly. Looking forward to your reply. Thank you.

Put checks in both "Automatically... fix errors" and "Scan ...for bad sectors". See
if that helps

You can't run a disk check in that way - that utility needs Windows not to be active
and it prompts if you want it to run at next startup.
You can run it by typing 'chkdsk' (no quotes) in the start . . . run box - look up
which switches you want after that command here
There's little point in defragmenting NTFS-based systems - did you have a special
reason for wanting to do that ?
PS What's with the 'windoms' ?

Sorry I meant Windows not Windoms and the reason I wanted to defragment was for no
special reason but just for the purposes of managing the drives becuase I was told
it was good to do so but your saying since it is NTFS, defragment wouldnt be useful
, but shouldn't it still be able to run a defragment instead of a message popping
which says " Disk defragmenter could not start". Furthermore when I use the command
prompt by typing in chkdsk and then the appropriate switches (i.e. /c,/v,/f,/r etc.)
it says that it had found some errors but wouldnt be able to corrrect unless i schedule
a disk check upon reboot but when i do schedule a disk check, the disk check screen
fails to appear on reboot. Your further help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Ram, do you have Windows XP install CD? If so, boot it and load the Recovery Console
(enter R at first opportunity). Once you get to the Command Prompt, enter chkdsk /r. Let it complete undisturbed. This can take awhile so be
patient.
Once that finishes, type Exit then remove the Cd and boot normally. Try defragging
your drive now, see if it will work.
I would recommend downloading and installing a program called DeFraggler.
It's a great replacement for the builtin one that comes with XP.
