Programs that always run

I would like to prevent programs from constantly running in the background. They are running from the moment I turn on the computer and I feel they slow it down a great deal. I do not want to delete them permanently though. Thanks for your help! Sharon

Open Task Manager.
How many processes are running?
What is your cpu utilization?
