Can't start in safe mode

I have a custom computer, XP with SP3 installed and it's running perfectly.I wanted
to run a virus check in safe mode but when I rebooted and pressed F8 everything progressed
as normal until I got a black screen with a list of files. After this nothing happened,
this screen simply remained.I tried resetting msconfig to selective startup but got
the same result.Yet the computer started perfectly into normal mode.Google has not
been any help here , hope someone can shed some light!

When you say you get a black screen with a "list of files", are you sure they are
not a list of OPTIONS?
One should be Start in Safe Mode and you select it by using the Arrow Keys and Press
Enter. That should start you up in Safe Mode.

Peter, are you sure that you waited long enough after
'until I got a black screen with a list of files. After this nothing happened'
This is normal and it might stop at that point for a while
Sorry if this is toooooo obvious, but you didn't mention how long you waited

I waited several minutes , perhaps a quarter to half an hour. The HDD light was showing
activity.
In fact it showed the screen full of files three times. clearing in between and then
reloading before sticking.
I always used to be able to start in Safe mode but haven't tried since installing
SP3.

More details

I just tried again and got the same result.The final line on the screen read;
multi(0)disk(0)rdsk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\giveio.sys
When I restarted the computer it loaded perfectly though a folder ATI.ACE was open
on the screen.
Hope these provide clues to somebody!

That file is associated with Speedfan, do you have it installed? Uninstall it temporarily
and see if that fixes the problem

Greetings
My question next to this has a great link to get bootable antivirus iso image that
when burned can remove the virus we have...
here are a few more sites...
However, there are a few sites I can confirm that have bootable CD's with preloaded
anti-virus software, here is a short list of the ones I know about:
http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html
http://www.freedrweb.com/livecd/
http://www.f-secure.com/linux-weblog/2008/06/
http://www.kaspersky.com/removaltools
I got these from frisco_ranger... a software seller on ebay
Thanks for your assistance!

Thanks. I uninstalled Speedfan and now the last file on the screen is Mup.sys
There IS a lot of information about this problem.Clearly it's a setting or some minor
thing because it only affects startup in Safe mode , normal starting up is fine (except
that in the last few days it opens the ATI.ACE folder. But I can't seem to sort it
out.

As far as ATI.ACE folder appearing on bootup, you have an entry in msconfig that
doesn't have quotation marks around the entry. You need to edit the registry file.
The entry should read "c:\windows\ati.ace". Look in this registry key for that
entry and just place quotation marks around it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
As far as Mup.sys goes you will just have to search online and try all suggestions
to get it to work.

Thanks. In fact I disabled it using Startup CPL.
I tried booting into Safe Mode yesterday and it was successful for some reason. It
didn't recognise my webcam though and wanted to load drivers for it.I simply unplugged
the USB lead and then put it back and everything was fine.
Thanks to all those who contributed.
