I have a better solution than Get Rid of the My Computer Icon:

Right click the desktop and go to properties. Choose the Desktop tab, and click the "Customize Desktop..." button under the background area. From here you can add or remove "My Computer", "My Documents", and "My Network Places".

That is just the Default setting for XP, which doesn't work for all the other Operating Systems mentioned in the article.
