two hardrives one computer

I know you can do this, but i don't understand how it works. I did install two hard-drives and selected one as the Master drive. When i start the computer it goes to my desktop.. I go to my computer and i see the other hard-drive. I click on it and i can get excess to my programs and files. But i thought that i could use either drive, like you would if you have one. I thought on start up you could select the drive you want to use.. The way it is now if i want to use the other drive.. i will have to unplug the one. Can you clear this up and is there such a things as selecting a drive to use. Thanks Rick

I dont realy understand what you mean . Your operating system is on "C" unless you
instaled it on "D" . The hard drives should be set up in BIOS as well as just puting
the jumpers on one to master = the one where the operating system is installed ,
and the other as slave . If you have done that you should start on "C" and be able
to acess and use "D" .

You can also install a second operating system and when you start you will be asked
which system you want to start .

So have i understood ? , if not please explain exactly what you mean and what you
want .

HI ya sorta., you got it. .i guess i have not explained it as well as i could.. The one drive has win xp on it and the other is a bigger drive and has a new installed win XP but a different version When i installed both drives i selected the new install as the master.. When i booted up the new drive was labeled C and the other drive was labeled D Doing this allowed me too look at the files on the second drive but that was about it.. I want to choose which drive to use on line.. so do i have the operating system installed by having both drives with XP on them> I did not go to Bios and change anything, so that is the step i am missing?? What do i change if thats all there is too it.. Thanks hope i got it more clearer Thanks Rick

I`m scratching my head now . Why do you want 2 diferent versions of XP on one computer
? What advantage are you seeking ?

If i were you i would just delete the XP system on "D" the slave and use XP system
on "C" the master .

Please explain more and i think your issue is easy to solve .

I just have alot of files and stuff that i want to leave on there, and dont want it on the new install. I went into Bios and it shows both drives, so i select the number 1 drive to boot up first and the second drive was selected. But it wont give me a choice of which to use.. goes to desktop and i see the second drive label as D. Maybe this is just to hard for me to figure out Rick

Possible BOOT.INI file on first drive.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
I does not matter what you call it, just the disk , portion and directory location matter.

"Try dual booting, you will find out. "

Life is not a quiz and i know what i do and why . I asked because i wanted to know
exactly what Rick was doing and why . If you have nothing usefull or positive to
say could you please keep that for yourself .

Rick i think you mean either you have put a hard drive in your computer as your second
hard drive that was a master in another computer , or you thought that to use the
second hard drive you needed to put XP on it as well ? If not ignore me and change
your boot .ini .

I don't think you can do what you want. Your requesting a dual boot setup using the
same basic operating system. Read THIS.

We often run across people that THINK they know what they want, but that's only because
they haven't given enough thought to the overall picture. Dual (not duel) booting
in your case seems to make little practical sense. There is so much more you can
do with two disks than one, but you need to open your mind to the possibilities.

You have a dual booting system already, that was for Oleg.He was asking for an advantage in dual booting. With dual booting you have two machines in one, there is always the second system you can run in case one goes down.

Sorry i wasted your time.. i thought this might be a simple answer but most are stuck on, the practical and advantage of me doing this.. thats for me to decide.. Just wanted a simple answer but i guess there isn't one. I have heard of many people having 2 hard drives on there computers.. i have to wonder now how much frustration they went through. Rick

I've got three hard drives in my computer, and haven't been the least bit frustrated
by them. While there is no good reason to dual boot between to different installs
of the same version of XP, you have been given the information on how to setup dual
boot. So your question as to how to solve your problem had already been answered
before I even threw in my 2 cents worth.
Had you chosen to do the second install with both disk in place, dual boot would
have been setup automatically for you. But you didn't bother to do learn before you
acted... always a mistake.

There are far more efficient methods than that to ensure quick recovery from some
sort of failure.

There is not a problem dual booting to two installs of the same version of OS, lot's
of people do it accidentally, and post here asking how to get rid of it. But it is
really a pointless way to setup a computer.

When you have a dual boot PC, you can only use one OS at a time.

I didn't think of that... ya' think he actually wants to move between the two installs
like fast user switching?

Hi Alex, I agree with you. With dual-booting you can do many things very quickly.
1. Boot into a stripped down XP that has less overhead.
2. Boot into a Version of XP that will NOT automatically connect to the network.
3. Boot int a Version of XP that was not damaged by a virus. You thne scan the partition that was infected. Some times this is the ONLY way to find the virus in a reasonable time frame.
4. Boot into a version of XP that is only used for your business.
5. Test or use programs that are mutually exclusive.
6. Take pride in doing something the somebody else does not like. It is not against the law.
But moderation is a factor. I seldom have more than three OS on one computer. If I need something else, I go to another computer. Some of my PCs have only one OS.
