Don't see why that wouldn't work, as long as the disable button is not greyed out.

The disable button is active (and seems to work). It's also possible to leave the
feature enabled and require it to ask you before it executes.

Then use it if you like it. I don't install Netframework so it's not a issue.

Probably because it's usually recommended to uninstall an ext., if you don't want
to use it. Disable it, if you want to. I don't know why you'd want to keep it, but
each to his own!

The doco does specify a "Standard User" - maybe that's why it is greyed out. You
need Admin privileges to do it.
The is one of the perennial questions with Windows - To use Admin logon (less secure)
or not use Admin logon (more secure).
I gave up with XP and 2000 after having to re-logon as Administrator for too many
simple tasks... MS seems to have seen the problem with Vista - where you can "run
as" Admin to do "hard core" stuff, but most everyday stuff is possible with the
the pseudo-Admin logon that Vista offers...

Thanks for the info. I only just read about this. I don't even know why I bother
to install .NET, besides a few small programs which need it for some reason. Microsoft
are way out of line installing this without permission.

I found .NET in "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel. Why can't I just remove
it from there? Wouldn't that take it off? ec

The .NET entry in Add/Remove is the program, not the extension mentioned in this
article.

Looks like it is not compatible with FF 3.5.

Microsoft Update History says I got this extension in Feb 2009 and received an update
in July 2009. I see it in add/remove programs with the change/remove button there.
It does not show up in Firefox's list of extensions.
or plugins. What does this mean? Can I remove it within add/remove programs?

My plugin disappeared to after the update. I had the plugin disabled. It's possible
that's the reason. I don't think you want to do anything.

I have only just acquired this .Net thing and am a recent recruit to firefox. It
initially seemed quite complex to deal with. However, I did a system restore to a
point before the auto-update from MS which got rid of it and have changed my Windows
security updates from "auto" to alert me before downloading or installing. Sweet!

I'd say that there's a bigger issue here - Microsoft exercise their right to install
anything they want, for whatever reason, on your system. For the occasional time
that I need to access internet (using XP mostly for games - this is for checking
info, asking questions, or downloading patches etc) I don't want to have to work
this hard to fix it up.
The simplest answer for me is to just use something else - I have Opera which is
the most secure browser. However, I find it extremely offensive that Microsoft can
get away with undermining Firefox! This should simply be removed and refused.

I thought you said "I have XP, but it never gets any kind of internet access . .

Actually I did, didn't I :P
Generally I prefer to download guides separately - I don't think I connected since
I installed Oblivion patches about two months ago. I have to be careful because I
have no security software installed, I just use ccleaner and defrag after installing,
then I boot up Clonezilla and update the latest image.
In general use, however, I find it the best policy to avoid connecting XP to internet.
As with this latest problem, it is where most of my problems arise from. Once I disable
networking after fixing it, it works fine for a long time.
