US keyboard to UK keyboard

I am in the UK and want a UK keyboard, as does a friend who has just phoned and asked for help. He found that shift + 2 gives him @ whereas the UK keyboard gives " for that combination. He may have, inadvertently, pressed both shift keys and the alt key at the same time to switch from UK to US keyboard. I tried this on my Win XP laptop and changed my keyboard from UK to US. I could only revert to the UK keyboard by rebooting. Is there a keyboard short cut to reverse Shift + Shift + Alt to make a UK keyboard. If you look in Control Panel nothing seems to have changed so the reversal cannot be done there. Any advice please?

The article is old, but introduces the basic ideas of how the keyboard is mapped.

This problem should have be long fixed in XP. Also, on this forum there are a number of posts about the Keyboard Map and how to change it. Norice that the left and right ALT SIGHT CTRL keys are not really the same. t That is to say, the left shift is not the same as the right shift.
