explorer.exe crash

For the past 2-3 days I've been getting the following msg before explorer crashes: Event Type: Information Event Source: Application Popup Event Category: None Event ID: 26 Date: 5/1/2009 Time: 1:36:42 PM User: N/A Computer: MICHAEL Description: Application popup: explorer.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x05de11dc" referenced memory at "0x05de11dc". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program Click on CANCEL to debug the program For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. I've googled 0x05de11dc and can find no reference to that particular error. Also, I can't seem to find any way to reproduce it--it just happens sporadically (maybe twice a day). I can't anything suspicious in my HijackThis log either. Any suggestions?

First, 0x05de11dc is not an error code, it is a memory location. Searching for it
is pointless. Search for "Event ID 26".

Is that the file explorer or ie?

What are you doing when Explorer crashes? What apps are you running, etc. Also, try to recall if you'd just recently installed any new software or made any other changes. That's the kind of info that's useful when requesting help.

I can recall no pattern or specific programs. No new software. In the initial message, I tried to include my HijackThis log... but apparently that isn't allowed. Explorer.exe is the program that shuts down.

I ran a Google search for: Event ID 26 Source Application Popup: explorer.exe- Application
Error to see if I'd come across a reasonable sounding piece of advice.

One possibility I came across is a corrupt file system, and to run chkdsk C: /f
> from a command prompt window to correct any errors. You probably know, but
it'll need you to reboot, before it can run. Hopefully, that's successful. Post back
and let us know. Someone more knowledgeable than myself, may have some advice to
add.

Reason is, Hijack This logs aren't to be posted, unless they're requested. Too often
users think that's going to help solve a problem, but it's not the answer to everything.
I doubt that's going to tell us anything related to this type of problem.

Other things to try (after "chkdsk C: /f"). Test after each.

1. Run "chkdsk C: /r" for a full surface scan. This will take a very long time.

2. Download a drive diagnostic from the drive manufacturer and run it.

3. Run a memory test. It is best to repeat (as needed) for at least a few hours.
memtest86 = http://www.memtest86.com/
Simmtester = http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/download_fp.asp

4. Run msconfig and disable all startup items. Test for awhile and then enable a
few at a time if it is fixed with a clean boot.
msconfig = http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310560/en-us

5. Run "Sfc /Scannow". You may need your XP CD.
System File Checker (Sfc /Scannow) = http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747/en-us

6. Check (disable) the Shell extensions as shown here:
Shell extensions = http://www.notsosoftware.com/Fixing_Windows_Explorer_Crashes.asp

7. Re-install your video card drivers.

8. It may be a bad multi-media file. Check this thread:
