Lost my volume control icon

For reasons that evade me I seem to have lost my Volume control in my task bar. I
have tried to tick the box in sounds and audio devices that places it in the bar
but I get an error message telling me it needs to be installed.
Can anyone help ?
Thanks

Click Taskbar properties - Taskbar tab. If Hide Inactive Icons isn't checked, check
it and choose Customize. Volume may be set to always hide. If so, choose "always
show" from the drop down menu, OK. Then uncheck the "hide inactive icons" again,
and apply.

The poster didn't say anything about a sound problem, only the volume icon not showing
in the taskbar.

Have done that but it still doesn't show I'm afraid.

I assume you applied the changes, after you went into Sound and Audio devices and
checked 'show volume control', etc.
Try this registry fix, in the left column...
320. Restore Volume/Net Icon to Notification Area
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
FYI, if you don't know how to d/l and merge a registry file. Right click the link
above and choose Save link as, or Save target as (in IE). Save it to your desktop.
Double click the .REG file to merge the info. into your registry.
Some changes require a reboot, but I'm unsure whether this fix does. Post back and
let us know if that works, please.
