Emails and IM work fine so connection is ok.

You might have some Malware issues it can cause plenty of IE problems. Even though
Firefox works and I suggest you stick with it, never hurts to run some scans. Malwarebytes
Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware would be good choices.

I had some trojans about 6 days ago, and ran Spyware doctor and norton AV. It found
and deleted/quarantined 4 trojans. 49 infections.
this AM i ran full scans with both programs and all was clear.

If Firefox is working but Explorer isn't, open Explorer and go to Tools/Internet
Options, hit the Advanced tab at the top, and press the big Reset button. It'll
take it a few minutes, and will, along with "fixing" Explorer, unset most of your
Explorer settings. (It won't lose your favorites, though). Assuming Explorer is
running after that, you'll need to reinstall your various add-ins, re-set whatever
security settings you had before, etc.

I just reopened IE explorer, and did what you said...reset the explorer. it did not
work. I still got the 'cannot open this program' page, so i went back to firefox,
and it opened fine.

Internet Exporer 8 was just released. Is that what you're running, or are you still
runing IE7?

OK. Have you checked to make sure that all of your installed firewalls are set to
allow IE7? One of those infections you got might have mucked with your firewall
settings, and although you've (probably) gotten rid of the infections, you may not
have reset your firewalls.
To see if it's a firewall issue, the easiest thing might be to (temporarily) disable
all your firewalls (Windows Firewall, Norton, etc.) and see if IE then works.

It sounds like you had some very nasty infections. Even though regular scans come
up clean, there may be leftovers those programs can't fix. That's very often the
case, and it often takes some special removal tools and steps to clear things up
completely.
I suggest you register and post on a malware support forum. They specialize in this.
There may be a wait of a few to several days, but they'll make sure you get it completely
taken care of... if at all possible. Malwares can really trash the OS which includes
IE, since it's an integral part of Windows XP.
Before posting, follow their preliminary cleaning steps. *Post on only ONE forum.

Just noticed you said you ran Norton and Spyware Doctor. For one thing, whenever
there's an infection you shouldn't rely soley on your onboard AV program. They often
get hosed from infections.
Panda Active Scan
Spyware Doctor is fine for an extra, but it's not one of the best. Currently MalwareBytes'
and SUPERAntispyware are tops. Download, install and update MalwareBytes' anti-malware...
run a scan. This will also be included in the preliminary cleaning steps on those
forums.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
P.S. Disable System Restore to clear out all previous restore points, since they're
likely corrupt and contain infected files. Reboot, then create a new restore point,
so you have something to fall back on.
While you're at it, set a limit on the amount of disk space it uses, e.g. between
1-3% of you disk size.

I dld and ran malwarebytes scan, and it found 5 viruses and 9 infections. cleaned
them all.
the viruses blocked my 'restore' from working so I could not go back even 2 weeks.
I dld firefox on my lan PC and transfer the file to this one that would not go
online, and installed it. firefox runs fine here now but not the IE 7.
I think I will just stick with firfox, and use the malwarebytes program also.

Even though you intend to use Firefox instead of IE, any leftover malwares remain
on your system. It's best to get it all taken care of, so you don't have further
problems. I still recommend posting on a malware forum.
