CD is missing from my DVD/CD burner

I have two burners 1) Sony DRU-500A & 2) HP DVD Writer 300n. Both are capable of burning CDs as well as DVDs. They both should be marked DVD/CD-RW Drive. However, the Sony has lost the /CD which means that Win Media Player won't use it because it doesn't recognize it as a CD burner. Both Nero and Record Now will use it. The last time this happened I "fixed" the problem by reinstalling XP and the other software. At this time I'm not that desperate.

Go into the Device Manager and delete the entries for the offending CD player then reboot.

I rarely return to a problem once I've answered it so make sure you clearly define what the trouble is.

Check the BIOS during startup, to make sure the hardware is recognized properly.
Then follow Special-K's suggestion.

No joy. I take "delete" to mean uninstall. The BIOS shows both devices and their model numbers.

Try this (change "drives" to singular):
1. Remove the drives from device manager. Re-boot, entering BIOS.
2. Remove the drives from BIOS - select none.
3. Re-boot into windows. If it finds the drives (check device manager) remove them
again, even if they appear to be working.
4. Re-boot, enter BIOS and re-enable them. Let windows load.

No joy, but I did learn something. The SECOND time I re-enabled them in the BIOS they were re-installed by Windows. That to me means that they weren't detected the first time, which says to me that I have an IDE controller going bad.

That is normal from some BIOSes, they will not allow xp to bypass them.

If Nero and Record Now cannot read a disc, it is probably the player. Try reading
discs through any means -- explorer, control panel, disc info (nero), etc. Try in
safe mode also.

You can download one or both of the bootable cds below and see if you can read cds
with them. If you can, it is something in the xp install. If not, it is probably
the read laser. It could be the controller, cable, etc., but I really doubt it.

Last minute thought: Try booting from any cd from that player -- before a high level
os is loaded.

98% of the time I can work with the Sony. 99.75% of the time the HP works just fine. So if it is the drive it is the Sony, which is the one missing the CD marker. The FIRST time XP came up w/o the devices. Both Nero and Record Now can read either device. The last time I went down this path it was Win Media Player that wouldn't use either of my drives, the HP had, also lost its CD. My take is that Nero and Record now use the character strings these devices return, but WMP uses some bit setting.
