atapi.sys issue

I had a mouse freeze the other day, upon reboot there is a BSOD with "unmountable
boot drive". Suspect itīs virus or malware. Im trying to use the XP install to repair
and use chkdsk, but upon booting from the CD I just get "cannot install atapi.sys"
after a while, then press any key and it aborts the installation.
Is there any way to recover from this? I really dont need a broken computer at the
moment.

You better run the manfacturers HD test and make sure the Hard Drive is OK.

Well, i suppose the HD isnīt ok because of the unmountable boot drive issue, but
should that affect atapi.sys - isnt it on the cd, how can it be corrupt if there
is a HD error? The computer can read from both HD and CD, and I need to get to the
recovery console to fix the HD boot which as I understand it should be doable. But
am I understanding it correctly that a HD error can make it so that the XP cd cannot
even install atapi.sys correctly? Kinda catch 22 if I cannot boot from CD to fix
the HD because the HD is messed up... :(

It could be worse, the drive controller could be shot.

Is that a sata disc? See the link, noting that the Drivers madmonkey points to are
probably NOT for your pc.

UPDATE: I booted with Ubuntu running it off the cd to see if it could shed some light,
and the HD was there and seemed to work just fine (could open files etc). Also while
I kept trying to run the XP setup it did pass atapi.sys once allowing me to go to
the recovery console, but chkdsk didnt work with c: /r (could be a syntax error on
my part?). Fixboot reported that it had worked but it didnt solve the unmountable_boot_volume.
I was afraid to use fixmbr due to the warning messages.. and now it reports that
atapi.sys is faulty again, and the times it passes atapi it reports faulty files
later before I can access recovery.
Should I try to find another XP CD and if possible then use fixmbr or should I send
the comp to professionals (could take weeks which I dont have atm)?

Start by getting all of your data off the disc with linux as I think that system
may be toast requiring a "clean" install.
You can then, in linux, delete atapi.sys from ...\System32 and from c:\ (if there).
You might also want to search for it anywhere else. See if you can get into rc then.
If the cd boots correctly, try booting from c: before trying any repairs.
Trying another cd (even the wrong version, just to see if it boots correctly) could
not hurt anything.
