The computer can read from both HD and CD, and I need to get to the recovery console to fix the HD boot which as I understand it should be doable. But am I understanding it correctly that a HD error can make it so that the XP cd cannot even install atapi.sys correctly? Also while I kept trying to run the XP setup it did pass atapi.sys once allowing me to go to the recovery console, but chkdsk didnt work with c: /r (could be a syntax error on my part?). Fixboot reported that it had worked but it didnt solve the unmountable_boot_volume. I was afraid to use fixmbr due to the warning messages.. and now it reports that atapi.sys is faulty again, and the times it passes atapi it reports faulty files later before I can access recovery. Should I try to find another XP CD and if possible then use fixmbr or should I send the comp to professionals (could take weeks which I dont have atm)? You can then, in linux, delete atapi.sys from ...\System32 and from c:\ (if there). You might also want to search for it anywhere else. See if you can get into rc then. If the cd boots correctly, try booting from c: before trying any repairs. Trying another cd (even the wrong version, just to see if it boots correctly) could not hurt anything.
