Question about 'What to Throw Away'

I have a question about What
to Throw Away:
I've just done a search for duplicate images on my machine and it comes as no surprise
that a great many repetitive files are Windows related...are there any guidelines
for which images might cause problems if deleted?

There aren't any image files that are all that important. Delete, but don't empty
the recycle bin until you are satisfied with the result. But why are you even bothering?

NOTE... that the article was last updated in 2001 and goes way back to Windows 3.1!!.
It is way out of date. The word "image" is used in various contexts, so we need
to know specifically the file name and the extension.
Note that there are duplicates of files throughout the directories of XP, and while
some may have identical names, they may be slightly different as tweaked by the manufacturers
of either hardware or software vendors to fit their respective uses. When they reside
in different directories, they may/will be associated with various programs that
will look for them in a specific location and some files can not be shared by two
running programs so you will need two copies of certian files depending on the programs
you have running. Deleting it may render the program inoperable. Do not delete
a file unless you are 100% certian you know what it is and if it can be deleted.
As to the files mentioned in the article, they are files that are not needed, or
old files created by windows that are not used, or needed after creation. There
is no guarentee that any files other than the ones mentioned can be safely removed
from a specific system without knowing what it is, and what it is associated with..

I agree with Ricer and CK's replies, furthermore:
In a standard out-of-the-box Windows installation there are numerous duplicated files
. . . for a purpose.
It would be dangerous to delete anything, particularly system files, unless you really
know what you are doing, and its impossible to give safe advice without knowing more
about why you want to do this and what state your PC is in.
I'd worry more about backing up files than deleting them . . but thereagain maybe
you already have that covered.
Tell us more and we can advise you better :-)
