Error message: Attempt to access invalid address
Monday, July 6, 2009 at 5:09 pm Posted by Chris Jordan

Tried to launch a programme that I have frequently used for the last 5 years and
received the error message as above. The programme does not install so I deleted
the folder with all contents. I then inserted a CD that I had previously stored the
programme on, attempting to install the application I got the same message again.
Have found many references to this problem but no solution. AV & antispyware have
found nothing. Have SP2. I find it odd that I get the same message from the CD. Any
ideas please?

Can't do much with "a programme", and "many references" etc !
What's the program ?
Is it a "DOS" production ?
Was it "installed" or is it just an executable ?
Did you actually uninstall it, or just delete the Program Files folder ?
What have you tried ?
Will it install in Safe Mode (I would have asked will it run in Safe Mode,
but too late for that now)
Which Malware scan(s) have you run ?

Had exactly the same problem last night on 2 identical computers. Even tried the
run from dvd disc. Also unable to use previous restore points since each and every
one rejected.
Have been using Comodo firewall for some 12 months and recalled that earlier in
day installed most recent updates.
Uninstalled Comodo firewall, restarted computer and the old Quicken version 5 being
used for many years was working again. Also the old restore points that had been
rejected were now working again.
Have emailed Comodo letting them know about this puzzle and hope they will make some
sort of change allowing me to return to their firewall.

Similar problems here with Comodo... I was using Lotus123 (DOS) for 19 years without
a hitch. Comodo was complaining about a malware infection in the .exe which I refused
to accept. Now it was not starting anymore. All is fine after I uninstalled Comodo.

Thank you for your reply. The programme is named addit. It is not a dos application.
I had installed it. When I discovered it would no longer work I went to add/remove
but it was not listed. Looking in the folder of this programme the read me text said
it does not alter any of windows setup. To uninstall just delete the files in the
directory to which I installed it.
I have not attempted to run it in safe mode. Have ran Spybot. What is interesting
is that the following two people who posted responses have exactly the same problem
and are using Comodo as I am myself. Like them I had an update over the weekend so
it makes me think that Comodo is the culprit. I guess the only way I am going to
find out is by removing Comodo and see what happens.

For what it might be worth.
I went to Hippo for the prior version of the most recent Comodo update. Finally
had to do a Google for the version by number and believe it came up on Znet.
Installed the version that I was running before the recent Comodo update and the
Quicken program runs and the restore points are as they were before the most recent
Comodo update.
So if you want to continue using Comodo , you might do as I did on the Setup for
Comodo and remove the request to check for updates to save meself from clicking yes
on offer of an update.

Thank you for your response. Your comment about Comodo started me thinking. I also
have Comodo and over the weekend I had an update for it. Because our problems appear
to be very similar I am 90% convinced it must be due to the update. I am going to
uninstall Comodo, I have an earlier version that I burnt to disc. Will reinstall
that version and see what happens. I will post back once completed. Thanks again
for mentioning that update.

Thank you for your response. Mickey's post got me wondering about Comodo as I also
have Comodo and had an update over the weekend and then the programme I had used
a couple of days before ceased to work. You also appear to have the same problem
so am pretty sure it must be Comodo. Am going to uninstall and reinstall an earlier
version that I had burnt to disc. Will post back and hopefully I will be as successful
as you, (fingers crossed!!) Thanks again.

Thanks for your advice. If you read my previous reply to you you will see I am going
to install an earlier version

As promised my post. Uninstalled Comodo, the programme worked, installed an earlier
version of Comodo and the programme still works. If it was not for your comment about
Comodo I would have been stuck. Good on you!! Thanks

Uninstalled Comodo, addit worked, Installed an earlier version addit still works
so it was Comodo who was the culprit

I just fixed it.
Yes, it was the recent Comodo update of a few days ago.
Comodo has just released a patch, which I got by checking for updates (Click on Miscellaneous,
Check for Updates within Comodo).
It wasn't there a couple of hours ago, but I just installed it, and now I am running
Word5 for DOS inside the DOS shell with Xp after rebooting.
