Question about 'Go Directly to Device Manager'
Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 10:32 am
Posted by Adela (32 messages posted)

I have a question about Go Directly to Device Manager:

Thanks, it helped me find Device Manager quickly. I wanted to go there to get the model number of my old monitor but it only said "Plug and Play". Is there another way to find this monitor info since it's too heavy for me to move it away from the wall to search it behind it? Someone told me one can get it from within the computer. Thanks so much!

The computer does not "need to know" the specific model of your monitor, so you won't
find it unless it's a relatively new one, and your description of it seems to have
ruled out that possibility.

You might state why you need to know that, perhaps there is a better answer to your
underlying problem.

Go to the link below and download Everest Home Edition (free)

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Everest-Home-Edition-Download-
16369.html

When you run the Program it will identify all the Hardware on your system. More than
you probably want to know.

Look on the left Pane for the item you want information on, the info will display
in the right Pane. Use the info to help with explaining the problem you're working
on.

Thank you very much, Bob, I went to that link and it's indeed a very useful one, but it didn't have anything about a monitor per se. Thanks again. :) Adela

Thanks so much, Ricer46, and I've just found out you are SO right that an old model won't have the model # inside my computer! Since you kindly asked me to state the reason for needing it, here it is: I have WinXP home; IE6; Panasonic NONflat monitor. I tried calling Panasonic Support but can't get it without the model number. The Problem: When I am on my Outlook Express email frames (or pages), where it's shown how many items there are read or unread on Inbox, or Sent Items, or Drafts, etc., part of the number is hidden. I tried the horizontal button in front of the monitor but I can't get it to move or to change that "2" that it has. I know it's behind the monitor but it is TOO HEAVY for me to push it away from the walls surrounding it. When they brought this monitor over, my desk got terribly scratched; hence hoped to find the model # inside. I did try a number of other suggestions but none worked. Thanks so much for suggesting to post an explanation. Maybe someone has the answer somehow. :o) Adela

Make the email Window smaller by dragging it in a bit with your mouse. If the controls on the Front of the monitor no longer work to shrink or adjust the size of screen then the Monitor is probably wearing out.

Did you install and run the program, or just look at the link? I can't tell from
your reply.

Thank you so much, Steve, that would help. However when I try to drag it from left to right (or vice versa until I know where to), both, the left folders column and the Inbox window get dragged together! lol! Is there a way to drag them individually? Thanks again!

All the Window dividers inside Outlook should be able to be dragged to different sizes also.

I'm sorry Bob, I was afraid to download it, but I just did and it shows 17 icons and I don't know what to do with them. When I did this with another program in the past, it would show an icon in my desktop and I 'd click on it to run it... Hope you could tell me what to do now? Thanks again.

Maybe only in Outlook? I have Outlook Express...and they both get dragged together...

I can drag all the Window dividers in outlook express, and get it totally messed up, and can easily drag stuff back. You might find a friend to help you out. Might take someone to site behind the Computer to see what your really talking about.

At the risk of stating the obvious it might be easier to get someone who can move
the monitor to it while you read the number. Also how old is the monitor?

I think I was able to get the model number from www.belarc.com. It showed this: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X (Microsoft Corporation) [Display adapter] Panasonic 15.7 [Monitor] (15.7"vis, May 1996) I will now go to Panasonic and try to get their tech support to help. If it isn't the moniotor at fault they might tell me... Unfortunately, I don't have anyone to help me move that heavy thing, the people I know are just as thin and old as I am, if not worse... lol! Thank you Adam!

The model number is NOT listed in that sequence. As I said before, the computer can
not "read" that information from an older monitor. And yours is very old in monitor
years - 13 years!! It's time to think about getting a new one. Typical life time
for a CRT is about 5 years. One of the many failure modes is that the display starts
to "bloom," and get bigger than the size of the screen.

However even though the entire screen won't fit within the display, you should be
able to resize the Window and all of the columns in OE as Steve suggested, for a
temporary fix.

Hi Ricer, you maybe right that it looks too strange to be a model #. I didn't know it was 13 years old. When I bought it from that person around 2 or 3 years ago it looked almost new and it worked well. However, this problem didn't occur with this same monitor when I went to the Microsoft Outlook Express Forum, also in the same format...I think I'll just click to reduce the window (where the numbers show) when I need to know the numbers until (and if) I can get someone to help me get the real model # from the back. thanks again! :o)

I'm sorry Ricer, I take back what I said here: "However, this problem didn't occur with this same monitor when I went to the Microsoft Outlook Express Forum, also in the same format..." I just went to try it again and it does it there too. But I'll continue as I mentioned in my previous reply. :o)

This information describes the video adapter in the computer: "NVIDIA GeForce4 MX
440 with AGP8X (Microsoft Corporation) [Display adapter]

This information describes the monitor: "Panasonic 15.7 [Monitor] (15.7"vis, May
1996)"
And presumably May 1996 is the manufacturing date, but I'm not sure how it can retrieve
that info.
And 15.7" is the diagonal size, which limits it to a few models.

Thanks for analyzing this code. I thought it might be the description of my video card, but if it says "adapter" it could be the adapter that my techi had to put in for the (used) video card to work (yes, he got it for me for $8; he's a good techi). He fixed it temporarily until I have a chance to buy a new computer. It IS strange that belarc.com could get all that info...however, I shouldn't be surprised since I understand there are ALL KINDS of hi tech devices to get into other people's computers... :o) thank you very much again!
