high cpu usage and slow loading pages

Hello to all! When ever I am using my computer on the internet I click on pages and the pages come on the screen pretty fast but here recently the pages started to load very slow, so I took a look at task manager to see if I cvould notice anything funny well I did when the pages start to load slow I open task manager and look at cpu usage and I see that the cpu usage is most of the time 100% then as soon as I open the task manager the cpu usage drops to normal and the pages start to load at regular speed. And every time I close task manager I can open it back up and cpu usage is always between 50 and 100%. Even with no internet pages open. This is making my work on the computer troublesome any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You didn't say which process is using up the cpu. Should we just guess that it's
iexplore.exe?

yes you may assume right about the cpu processes being used may be iexplore.exe. I dont know if that is what is causing my problems but when I responed to this I had 4 iexplore.exe running in my task manager. And it seems that I may have duplicate processes running also like svchost.exe network service. I dont understand why I would need two processes running named the same. Inside my task manager the cpu listing under processes all read 00 but I can tell the other processes are doing something because the memory usage changes. I am sorry I can not explain this better for I am just starting information technology school so I am just learning all of this technical jargon. help will be appreciated. thanks

It is perfectly normal to have multiple instances of certain services
such as svchost.exe active time because they may be used by
more than one program or application running at the same time.
The memory usage and changes are also nomal and are
essentially irrelevant to the problem you are having unless the
total memory resources are running out. What matters in this
instance, as Ricer inferred, is CPU usage. You do not state which
version of Internet Explorer you are using, but it is almost certainly
the culprit.

Try clearing your system of I.E's temporary innternet files and
other junk. The recommended tool for this is Ccleaner, which
you can find with Google if you do not already have it.

If the problem persists after you have done this, try a different
browser such as Firefox. If that fixes the problem, you will know
for certain that the blame for your problem lies with IE.

multiple instances of svchost is normal.
Multiple instances of IE is definitely not.
Besides Norm's suggestions scan for malware. Switching to Firefox is also a good
move for multiple reasons.

yes thank you to the both of you. I ran norton 2009 utilities to clean files, etc. and found a unusual number of problems that it was able to correct. The pages seem to be working better now. I am running internet exploer 8. It seems that with every window I open in internet exploer there is a responding iexplore.exe for every window open. Is that the norm? If I end process of each iexplore.exe then another window I have open will close and that iexplore.exe is gone. I believe the security is pretty safe on this computer for I observe all files download and seem to have to pass through norton 2009. Like I said I am in school for information technology and have the basic knowledge I think to be aware of most attacks and how they happen. NOTE that I an just starting, my major is information systems security. If problems continue I may switch to firefox and if norton is not doing the job for malware then I may purchase a malware detection program. If you have not suggested one already in the replys I would appreciate some advice on a quality program. I am aware that not all programs are what they are cracked up to be. The unsualness that I did not state earlier is that my cpu usage drops to 1 or 2% after I open task manager then I close it turn right around and open task manager agin and cpu usage is back to 100% thendrops to 1 or 2% as long as I leave task manager window open. It seems strange that the cpu would drop back to normal as long as I leave task manager open and I watch it when I change pages and it stays within normal range. I find it veryu odd that the task manager window would appear to stop the cpu usage it makes me think that malware maybe in place. I understand that some programs allow people to use your computer without effectinhg much of its process therefore aloowing these people to go seemingly undetected to the untrained person. By no means am I that experienced. But give me a year more in school and I should have things down pat. Thank you for your help.

Opening up multiple instances of IE will indeed produce the same number of instances
that show up in the Task Manager. But with IE 7 or 8, there should be no reason to
open more than one, since M$ wised up and copied Mozilla's innovative idea to use
tabs.

One should expect for the cpu usage to spike whenever a new program is started, same
when you go to a new page, but if you have enough cpu speed, memory, and bandwidth,
it should settle back down quickly.

Many Norton products are resource hogs, and can bring a system to its "knees." Most
of the regulars here avoid anything produced by Symantec. However one of the real
experts here has recently stated that the Norton 2009 version does not suffer the
problems of previous versions.
