Gray shadow boxes surrounding all icons.

Hello all! I am a newbie and really need help. After a recent automatic update, all my desktop icons are surrounded by an annoying gray shadow and my icon names are in gray boxes. Attempting to change folder icon isn't working, seems like this has something to do with deleting a file but have no idea where to begin. Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but take a look at this url: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/why-do-my-icons-have-a-background-color-in-windows-xp/#
