systems registry data had to be recovered by use of log etc

I know this seems to be a quite a common problem. I have done a disk check, refrag the registry and also did memtest with no solution. Then I read Ben Crouse's solution but I dont understand it. He recommends to make a back up of the original ntuser.dat, replacing it with the Windows repair copy, then finally overwriting a newly created one with the backup copy. Would this cause the same problem as before ? Tks

Wouldn't it make sense to reference "Ben Crouse's solution?' That way we might have
some idea as to what you are talking about. The procedure you described makes little
sense.
A better way to backup the registry is to use erunt. ntuser.dat is only part of the
registry.

Sorry , here is the procedure I was referring to: Quote: 1. Create a new user account with administrative rights on the affected machine. Navigate to the affected user's profile directory and copy ntuser.dat to a folder named backup on your C: drive. (example for a user named dave: copy c:\Documents and Settings\dave\ntuser.dat to c:\backup) 2. Once you have backed up the ntuser.dat file, overwrite it with the one located in c:\windows\repair\ (example for a user named dave: copy c:\windows\repair\ntuser.dat to c:\Documents and Settings\dave\ ) 3. Log off the temporary account you have created and login to the affected user account and let windows fully load up. This will create a new ntuser.dat file under the user's profile. 4. Once windows has fully loaded up, log back out of the affected user's account and log back into the temporary account you made earlier. 5. Copy the ntuser.dat file you backed up earlier to the user's profile directory overwriting the new file that was created. (example for a user named dave: copy c:\backup\ntuser.dat to c:\Documents and Settings\dave\ ) 6. Log out of the temporary account and log back into the computer under the affected account and see if the problem is fixed. Hope this work for you like it did me. Unquote. This process did not make sense to me because after all the manipulation , we are replacing the new ntuser.dat with one that presumable had problems. Why not just leave the ntuser.dat from the repair folder? Tks

Next time mark the check box at the bottom of the screen to preserve spacing.
The procedure makes no sense to me. I would agree with your assessment; however the
one from the repair folder may not produce acceptable results, depends on how old
it is.

In the future, you should look into erunt for making backups of your registry and/or
look into disk imaging software.

Sorry, I did not notice the "preserve spacing " check box.

Now I am stuck with the problem and don't know how to fix it. I read somewhere that
I maybe able to repair my ntuser.dat file if I use regdatxp 4.1

Would the problem go away if I create a new user account with admin privileges then
copy over my profile to the new user account using WinXp Files and Transfer wizard
?

Any other suggestions?

Right now its just an annoyance . I am afraid that the problem might get worse with
time and I may not be able to log into my account in the future . It's too bad that
windows just went ahead and used the alternate copy but don't list the files that
are causing the problem in the first place.

I don't think you ever said what the problem was. In many cases yes, in others no.
I wouldn't trust the product you named, although I am not familiar with it.
I avoid ever having problems that might require a fix like you are attempting, by
making Acronis image backups.

The problem is that when I boot up , the following message shows up:

"One of the files containing the Systems Registry data had to be recovered by use
of log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful"

I had to click OK 2 times or more before the User accounts log in screen shows up.

I then click on my user account and the message appears again. I click OK once more
and then I am logged in. Then everything works as expected.

This message appears also if I log into my wife's account but does not show up when
I log into Guest account.

Both our accounts have admin rights .

This is really puzzling . It started sometime ago . It happened certainly at an earlier
date than I can restore to.

I made a Google search of this issue and this seems to be quite a common problem
but no one has a definitive solution .

Account corruption is not uncommon. Don't understand why both would go bad together,
yet not the guest account.
But one way to deal with corrupt accounts is to create a new one, move data from
the old to the new, then delete the old account. Don't try to rename the new account
to the same name as the old one after deleting it.

In this situation (if it happened to me), I'd restore my last good image file, and
be done with both problems in just a few minutes.

The problem is that when I look at the available restore points they seem to be
later in time than when I first spotted the problem so restoring will not workout
. I may just have to create a new user account and move over my files , docs & settings
using the windows XP Transfer files utility .

I would just copy the files by hand, copying files and settings is likely to transfer
the problem with it. Have you scanned for malware yet? That can sometimes cause random
errors.

That's why System Restore is nearly worthless. I disable it immediately on install.
As Adam told you do not use the Transfer utility, and he made a great suggestion
that slipped by me to check for malware. They often cause strange problems that
make no sense.

Yes, That was the first thing I did. I scanned for Malware using :
 a) Spybot SD b) Superantispyware c) Advanced System Care

I also did a Boot Time scan with Avast for virus .

No trojan, virus but some spyware were found . All spyware were quarantined.

I created a new admin profile yesterday . Copied all files and folders in docs and
settings from my old profile except ntuser.dat/.log/.ini to the new profile. I over
wrote the new with the old whenever there was a duplicate

Problem still there.

Maybe I have to delete my old profile before it will work? But before I do I have
to manually transfer all my files and get Outlook to work in the new profile ( ie
have to set it up) .I thought it would work immediately because during the copy to
new profile I noticed that the Pst was transfered . It looks like it did not transfer
my comcast settings . Maybe I could just delete the old profile but retain all the
old files to save work ?

Any other suggestions?

Try just copying the data files, in all likelihood the thing causing your problem
is in the .ini and .dat files.

Same as what Adam told you, you screwed up by copying everything.
You essentially did everything the Files and Transfer wizard does.
ONLY copy the data files, that's mostly the My Documents folder,
but if you look harder you can find email files, and bookmarks and copy those as
well.
So delete the newly created account, and do it over.

I did not copy the old ntuser.dat / log /ini files from my old profile over to the
new profile. I used the new ones created in the new profile. I copied everything
else incl email , my documents etc . Still did not work for me. I will try it again
.

I finally fixed the problem. There were 3 files in the Zonemap\domains that were
corrupted. Removing these entries stopped the annoying messages. I used Regdatxp
.

Henry , the author of RegdatXP helped me through the process .
