dos command file hangs

Over the past several days, I've experienced a problem with a cmd file hanging up.
I use it to start a service that I prefer not to start automatically on boot.

Normally when I click on the shortcut, the two commands contained in the file execute
and the window closes in the blink of an eye. But now, after the commands execute,
the window doesn't close. I have to force-terminiate.

Also, when I open a DOS window and type Exit, the DOS window hangs and I have to
force-terminate.

Any idea what could cause this?

Did you make any changes (especially updates) before it stopped working?

I haven't installed any software recently. Also, I'm very aggressive at keeping my
running processes to a minimum. Process Manager only shows 17 *processes* and no
applications running on my system when I close my browser.

There's now more to the story...
Also in the past couple of days, something has been deleting my boot.ini and autoexec.bat
files when I re-boot. A Google search strongly indicated the ASK toolbar, and even
IE8, but neither program is installed on my computer.

I installed Process Monitor and I was able to capture Services.exe red-handed as
it deleted boot.ini and autoexect.bat, and attempting to delete two other read-only
files in my root directory!! I did a binary file compare with services.exe from another
computer and there are no differences, which would seem to suggest that services.exe
is not infected. Various and sundry system scans have turned up nothing.

Of course, there's no way to tell yet if this is related to the command file hanging
issue but since I have more to go on with the delete issue, I posted my PM log in
the Sysinternals Process Monitor forum. We'll see what the folks over there come
up with.

David

I would run a virus and malware scan, sounds like you might have a bug in your system.

I agree, but several different scanners found nothing.

Unless someone here happens to have specific knowledge of this strangeness, it's
probably best to wait for my query over at the PM forum to play out. I'll update
this thread either way.

Thanks,
David

Also note that while windows uses "Services.exe" as a part of the operating system
a bug can use the same name and be in a different folder, it is a trick used to fool
you sometimes. Also it only loads services, so it might be a service something loaded
that is the problem.
