Changing HD Sharing resets ALL archive bits

To backup my laptop data, I use a batch file based on the XCopy command that looks
for the set Archive bit for only files that have changed recently.

But, when I take my laptop to hot spots, I turn the hard drive sharing off for better
data protection.

For some reason, Windows XP sets the archive attribute bit for ALL the files on my
hard drive during this sharing on/off process.

How can I turn my hard drive sharing on or off without XP affecting the archive bits?

Thanks ...

Sorry to say I think you can't. Enabling/disabling sharing resets a bunch of files attributes and I don't know of any way to tune that. Maybe someone knows better . . . . But if you have XP Pro, , then why not use an ACL instead of file sharing? That would protect you in the circumstances you describe without having to turn file-sharing on and off. Have a read of this
