Windows Update KB971486 wants to install over and over ??

Hi,

For the record I am using a Compaq Presario AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3300+, 2411MHz/1.93
GBs RAM, running Windows Xp Home, SP3., with IE8.

This morning I downloaded and installed all the monthly Security Updates released
from Microsoft.

About an hour later I noticed I had another update notification in my taskbar so
I installed it too. Then I discovered it was one I had already downloaded and installed
(KB971486) earlier in the morning.

Even now, about six hours later, I still have a notification in my taskbar that I
have an Update ready to install and it is still the same one I have already installed
twice today.

I tried submitting this same question to the Microsoft Windows XP forum this morning
but when checking their site about 30 minutes ago I discovered my question hadn't
even been posted and I noticed there were no other posts for today either which is
strange in itself.

Regardless, is any one else experiencing this problem or have any idea what is the
problem?

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Try restarting the computer. If that doesn't stop the reminder then I'm clueless on what else to try.

Hi Steve,

I appreciate your quick response and suggestion.

However, I have tried restarting several times and it didn't seem to get rid of the
Update Shield in my Taskbar.

My Event Viewer has also been showing several errors since this Update problem.
They are all similar to this one:

 NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32)
- Failed to compile: Microsoft.Build.Utilities.v3.5, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a . Error code = 0x80070005

They have been appearing about every two or three minutes in the Event Viewer with
the only difference in the entries being the NET version number.

Right before I started responding to you I went ahead and rebooted and then checked
Windows Update again and it still shows KB971486 as already being downloaded but
waiting to be installed.

Since this last restart Event Viewer is not showing any more errors and the M/S Update
Shield is 'hid' on my taskbar.

As I said before I have already installed this sucker 'successfully' three times
according to my Windows Update History page.

What worries me is Secunia PSI started telling me today when I run their scan that
my Windows version is insecure because this Security Update is not installed.

Yet Microsoft Update is telling me I successfully installed it three times.

I have also posted at Secunia's forum too but haven't gotten any feedback yet.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Windows updates can and do cause problems. I don't install them, and encourage My friends to do the same. My suggestion is turn off Auto update and don't worry about it.:)

I have the same problem. I downloaded the entire update from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=CECE4C55-0756-4357-9D2D-6709E8426068&displaylang=en

ran the update, rebooted, and the yellow shield telling me I needed to install an
update disappeared. But BitDefender Antivirus 2009 is still telling me I need to
install the update DOH!

I have always just had Microsoft notify me when updates are available and then I
download and install them when I am ready.

Thanks for your follow-up.

Same problem, even after several installs and restarts. Please post if you find a way to resolve this.

Morning Dan,

Thanks for coming aboard.

I tried the solutions given on the link you provided but my computer is still showing
that KB971486 is downloaded and needs to be installed.

Since my Windows Update Review Page shows I had already successfully installed this
update three times I used the directions given that pertained to when the Update
shows as being installed.

I guess my only question right now until someone (me included) figures this out is
since my Windows Update page says it is 'installed' as well as the entry for it in
the 'Add/Remove Program' section can I consider it installed and I have no security
breaches as a result of it?

Or, since Secunia PSI says it isn't installed should I go by them?

Thanks and regards,

Phil

This is the problem Microsof have over and over. I think all the good know how people have gone to Apple. I gave up after installing it 42 times. Microsoft now is the most disfunctional company on ther planet. I have switched to Mack for the main computers and are just using this PC until it get run over by a truck, and soon I hope
