windows repair

i have an inspiron 1100 running xp. i bought a new scanner [HP 4050] but the install
is tripping all over something wrong in my windows directory. if i try installing
with it UNATTACHED (as per instructions), i get this popup around 4% of the way in:
hp Update Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience.
details provides:
AppName: setup.exe AppVer: 3.5.0.0 ModName: setup.exe ModVer: 3.5.0.0 Offset:
0000d7a9
with more details supposedly in some log file (which i cannot seem to find!).
anyway, clicking "ok" or w/e allows it to continue in spite of this popup. soon,
though, it's giving me ANOTHER popup, this time with:
D:\setup\hpzmsi01.exe -list productsw:
the windows installer service could not be accessed: this can occur if you are running
in safe mode [ED: i am not!] or if the installer is not correctly installed. contact
your support personnel.
click ok to continue.
this time "continue" means aborting, with it suddenly UNinstalling everything before
my eyes. eventually there is nothing left, and -- just to add insult to injury --
it reboots.
-----
otoh, if i try installing with the scanner attached (despite instructions), it gives
me a diff batch of error messages. also at the 4% mark, but this time it asks me
to "insert XP disk 3". drivers maybe? i dunno -- i don't even HAVE an xp disk *1*,
let alone 3!
i asked here (or somewhere!) a long time ago, and they explained that it is rare
to get windows disks with a PC anymore. apparently there is a "hardwired partition"
(?) in the BIOS (?) itself, whence you can repair/reinstall XP. if there IS, someone
clue me in how to find it!
it also gives me the option to DL the "missing files", from 1) d:\386, 2) some dell
site, 3) some HP site. alas, but i don't kno what to point #1 at, and #2 and #3
simply do NOTHING. (i really thought i was home free when it went to a specific
dell page, but then it just stays there....)
obviously, i've mucked up my windows directory somehow. which wouldn't surprise
me -- i did do some messing around there 4-5 months ago -- but for the fact that
it is the *FIRST* such problem i've encountered all these months**!! all sorts of
other apps and devices install, uninstall, and REinstall just fine!
so, how do i repair xp, or, barring that, (gasp) REINSTALL xp?!
i've also posted this on a scanner-specific forum, but it seems to me this is entirely
a "windows component is munged" issue. "windows installer", specifically.
------
** technically, i'm also having a problem with the "update" site. which may or may
not be related -- i've just noticed BOTH problems around the same time.

Installing on a windows folder other than "C:\Windows" is rarely an issue for modern
programs so I doubt that is it. What does HP say about this? Are you suing the latest
version of the scanner software and driver?

Nothing is installed to a folder "other than C:\Windows". But something INSIDE said
folder is apparently MISSING. And could prolly be replaced/repaired easily given
a set of INSTALL DISKS.
Which, ppl inform me, are rare nowadays. So how do I access this magic "hidden partition"
where this stuff sits?

The hidden partition if you have one is only for restoring the OS and programs to
the factory condition of the laptop, see your computers maker for how to use it.
backup every file before you do as they are unlikely to be there afterwards.
