domain controller not found

I have a dell inspirion E1505 laptop. This morning I got the message: domain controller not found after I entered my username and password, but I am not on a network. This is the first time this has happened. What can I do? There is no network. I do have a network at home. But this computer is not a part of it, nor was it ever. I would appreciate any help, thanks!

Actually it gives the message: "The system cannot log you on right now because the domain D5QWN1B1 is not active. So a friend told me it was the domain controller.

If you are using a wireless Internet connection you might look at this If that's the issue you may have a malfunctioning wireless NIC.

Thanks, but it was on a normal lan wire. Here is the deal. This computer is used on my dsl and I travel with it and plug it in to other networks to use the internet. Last eweek, it had a crash while connected to another network. Now the system is not accepting my password. It is looking for a domain to give it permission, I think. Hope that makes sense

Yes, that makes sense - heaven knows what half-state it thinks it is in ! Have you tried a System Restore to before the crash, that would probably work.

Did you join the domain while you were there?

Yes I originally logged on using the LAN. But the system crashed and started acting crazy. I have used this network several times before. But I would always start my computer and then log on to the network. I am not using the companies internal network. Only logging on to the Internet. I hope that makes sense.

Open Help and Support (in the Start menu). Click on Undo changes to your computer with System Restore then on Restore my computer to an earlier time and Next. Now follow the instructions on the page which opens. You can go back to the previous month by clicking on the left arrow by October 2009.

The problem is that I can not logon to my xp. I am stuck at the login screen, and when I put in my password, it tells me it cannot located the domain. I does not take my normal password. Can I restore without logging in?

Try starting in safe mode and using the local administrator account (the one called
administrator, should be a blank password if you never set one.)

Tried it in Safe Mode, and it gives me the same error as before: "The system cannot log you on now because the domain D5QWN1B1 is not available." That is the same error like before. Any other ways to restore without a password?

I used microsoft ERD disk to roll back the system. That was fine. But when I go to logon I still have the orginal problem with the domain controller. It keeps telling me that the domain is unavailable, but I am not on a domain. The computer is not connected to a network

Sadly, I'm afraid ERD won't do what you are trying to do - it only repairs system basics and sets out NOT to interfere with settings and the like, which are probably where your issues lie. I wish I had constructive input to what WILL work, but am stumped by your issue :-( I still think that a System Restore to before this happened would have worked - did you have amy luck with finding earlier Restores ?

There's no such thing as "a system restore from an xp disk" ? You can either: 1. do a System Restore using the Help and Support Centre to a saved restore point [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084] or 2. Do a repair/install using your XP disk [http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm] I think 1. has the greater chance of success, but this sure is an abstruse problem :-(

I am having the same problem with that error message, and being unable to logon my
new Windows XP install, by any means. Tried Safe Mode, tried old-school-style-logon-as-administrator
trick, tried safe mode. All resulted in the (pretty useless) statement about domain
controller n whatnot. Most googling only brings up stuff useless to me, about logging
in to networks on Win2k.

Background info: I am on a recently reformatted hard drive. My CD drive does not
function, so .... well... long story short, I used a specific utility to make my
flash drive operate as Windows setup (using WinXP SP3 iso as base). A lot of work
to avoid just buying a new CD drive and using my own legitimate Windows CD, but I
digress. On account of method used, I had to fix the boot.ini afterwards so it tried
to boot off the right place, but I digress

Currently am stuck for a solution that doesn't involve being able to logon u.u

GUYS.. come on.. at the logon screen, click OPTIONS or SHOW or MORE options, or whatever the verbiage is, then select the entry that is NOT THE DOMAIN, it is typically the PC NAME, then use the local administrator username and password IF you dont remember it, the ERD Disk you have already will let you change the password (LockSmith ) to something.. THEN when you are in, remove the pc from the domain, it will ask for domain admin username and pass, but i think you can fudge it because it cant confirm it, im not sure on that part but either way, you are in at this point.. PeacE
