startup errors after installing microsoft updates

I have a Gateway 4520GX laptop running XP home. Last week when installing scheduled
updates, the computer froze. Upon rebooting, I received the following three errors:
1: User environment: windows cannot load the users profilebut has logged you on with
the default profile for the sytem. Default - Insufficient system resources exist
to complete service requested.
2: Parser message: Value creation failed"line 422
3: userinit.exe: Application failed to initialize properly (0xc000012d). Click OK
to terminate the application.

I used the system restore disc to return to the clean OS. I downloaded antivirus
and ran a complete scan. No viruses found. I then downloaded SP2 (rebooted fine).
Downloaded all updates but SP3 (wont allow my wireless adapter card to function).
Upon rebooting, received the same errors.

Restored original state. Ran antivirus. This time I only downloaded SP2 (rebooted
fine) and updates relating to security for Windows XP and SP2. Upon rebooting, received
the same errors.

So I again tried restored the original state. I will load antivirus and SP2 only.
 No more updates, EVER!!

I am concerned to never load updates for fear of these errors, as this will leave
my computer vulnerable to malicious code/hackers.

However, upon loading SP2 (rebooted, worked fine) then the antivirus, I received
the errors.

I'm completely stumped!! What are my options? Why can't I seem to get simple updates
that once loaded fine (prefreeze a week ago) to load at all?

Instead of a laptop, I now have a paperweight. I was considering upgrading the ram
from 480MB to 1 GB. Would this help or just be a waste of time and money? A guy
on craigslist offered me $50 for parts. Should I take it and move on with my life?

Any and all ideas appreciated.

Thank you,

Sarah

Why don't you try again, from scratch, but this time WITHOUT loading your antivirus
program. It sounds like that might be what's interfering with the update installations....it
certainly wouldn't be the first time. If the updates all work fine without the
antivirus program installed, I'd ditch that particular antivirus package, in favor
of the (free) antivirus/antimalware download from Microsoft, which you can find by
googling for Microsoft Security Essentials. To avoid getting "stung," just don't
go to any websites (other than Microsoft's) prior to completing all your updates
and the installation of Security Essentials.

In addition to Ari's advice, which hopefully will get your system back, many don't bother with XP updates any more. IE is the big malware magnet so if you use Firefox and a good AV plus a couple of regular malware scans you'll be fine without updates - unless you have very dodgy surfing habits or use file-sharing sites, I'd say.

If you insist on the SPs they seem to work much better if you slipstream them into
your install CD, this will not work with a recovery partition and may or may not
with a recovery disk, all depends on how it is made. As stated by martin many do
not install them at all as they often create more problems than they are worth.

Thanks everyone. I started downloading SP2 before your responses. That seems to be working okay. I turned off automatic updates and downloaded the Microsoft Security Essentials. Next I will load Firefox, Office and my printer driver, and hopefully be good to go. I'll post if I run into any more trouble. Thanks again.
