not sure where to start, kinda n00b so bear with me. first issue is no sound. have onboard sound, the one with the purple, green, and blue inputs and a soundblaster audigy 2 zs, neither are working despite the volume controls showing the volume is on, and no mute. problem two, the following items in the device manager have ! next to them, and the update driver option says the wizard can't find a match better than the one installed:radeon 9800xt(this device cannot start), trident video accellerator 96xx/938x(This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12) the following have ? next to them, and getting same message with the update driver button:ethernet controller(The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)), RAID controller(This device is disabled. (Code 22)), sm bus controller(The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)), video controller(The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)) third issue, i have four ram slots, when i have all four ram sticks inserted and i start my computer, the monitor does not come on, when i take one out, the computer beeps like hell and still don't come on, it loads ok with two. and finally, i have two video cards, no onboard, don't know types, one i use for my monitor, the other for an svideo out to my tv, sometimes the tv comes on, other times it does not. i know this is a lot to drop at once, but they do seem like minor issues, my comp basically works ok, so please help.

For the hardware you need to track the drivers down, if they are built into the motherboard
then your motherboard maker would have them available on their website. For anything
that is not on the motherboard, check with the company that made it for the driver.

The third issue (the TV out one) is either a driver problem or a flaky card, check driver first. To get the model numbers on the video cards and the other hardware look on the card, it will have a model number printed on the board somewhere, and either Google that to find the card maker or go to their site and look up that model.

As for the RAM, some types must be loaded in pairs which is likely why you are unable to boot with 3 sticks. Try swapping them around and see if it is always the same stick that prevents the system from starting, if so then you just need to replace that stick.

Is this a new system or an older one that has been upgraded over time?

i don't know where to find the drivers i need, and don't know which ones are from my motherboard or from other hardware, or how to manually install them, my mobo is asus sk8n.....have swapped the ram around, and it does the same thing.....this computer was found in the trash, it had a disk read error, so i put in another hard drive, and re-installed windows xp, the sound used to work before, don't now....please bear with me, thanks

It looks like you have somehow screwed up your chipset drivers (aka: motherboard
drivers).
Go to the ASUS website and find the right drivers for your mobo.
Once THAT is installed, Windows will most likely be able to install or update the
other drivers.
In the worst case, you may have to delete some of the troubled devices and let Windows
detect them at the next reboot.

Go to the Asus web page, there will be a link for driver downloads, look for your
motherboard, d/l and install the audio driver.

Well I hate to be this blunt but I am honestly starting to think it was in the trash
for more than one reason.

had a buddy look at it before, he has software/hardware degree, and he said only problems were some driver issues and the fact that i have no bios installed, which shouldn't be a real problem, according to him....any other way to fix sound issue?, i have fixed the monitor problem(loose videocard), ram don't really bother me much, but sound is needed, any other way to trouble shoot would be appreciated, thx

Either you misunderstood or your friend is computer illiterate. If the computer had
no BIOS installed, it would be stone cold dead. You should be able to buy a sound
card for about $10.

The BIOS is the thing that lets any part of your computer talk to any other part
of it. If it was not installed there would be nothing to tell you it was not installed.

You have a dead mobo. The BIOS chip is hard soldered to the motherboard.
Perhaps there is a slim possibility that it has a dual BIOS chip, which would allow
you to choose one or other as a part of the BIOS setup. If this were the case (highly
unlikely) the problem could be easily corrected. You need to examine the mobo documentation,
available on the ASUS web page. I'm not going to look it up for you.

Lost track of your original post. See the other thread you started for another idea.
But as you have been told, you should keep it all together.

The SATA BIOS is a separate device driver that has not been installed. Obviously
you have an IDE drive - so you don't need THAT one.
Find out what key lets you get into the BIOS setup (thant can be the DEL key, or
F12 or whatever it says at startup). Then interrogate what has been enabled and what
has not.

Quasimodo
