Firewire freezes computer

Hi guys, I am having a problem with my Firewire. I am using Windows XP on a HP Pavilion a6030n. When I plug in my external Harddrive (Western Digital - WD 2500) via firewire my Windows starts acting up; for instance, it won't open certain folders, meaning it doesn't even respond if I double click the folders. I use Driver Detective to make sure my drivers are up-to-date. The external Harddrive works fine as is since my Powerbook Mac can read it without problems, and so does my PC laptop. My only problem is my main HP PC. Any suggestions? Thank you for your time. Luigi

driver detective is unreliable, update drivers manually, there lies the problem
