Hi, I have an HP computer with windows xp. The computer restarted for no apparent reason, I wasnt downloading or installing anything. Now it keeps going to a screen which gives me the choices of: safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last good configuration, start windows normally, now matter which one i pick the computer reboots back to that same screen again and it wont go any further. I know I could restore to factory settings but theres a lot of family stuff on there that we dont want to lose. any help would be appreciated :)

The files are your priority - I'm assuming you don't have backups :-( Trying to get Windows working again may risk those files, so you have three options: 1. Get a Puppy Linux CD, boot from it and copy your files to external media such as a flash drive. Or . . take out the HDD and either: 2. Pop it into a USB enclosure (cheap !) and read the files from another PC. 3. Mount the HDD in a desktop PC and read the files that way. Later, once you have your files safe, you can address why your PC isn't functioning or do the System Restore (but you may find you have hardware issues). Hope this helps.

download BARTPE, its like a windows live cd, backup your data and then format, Im
not sure how familiar are you with linux, but using the puppy distro might be tricky
if you have no idea what linux is and how things work there... BARTPE looks just
like windows and you can get it free almost anywhere, just google it... if you cant
find it or need more instructions, let me know, and I can "up" it for you! keep us
updated!
