I had a problem with my Dell Latitude D 400 wireless laptop, froze, rebooted several
time's, still froze. I installed XP with a disc I had over the factory install,(no
disc came with it), now I cannot get on the net, disabled all the devices listed
as "other devices" in Device Mgr., Ethernet controller,Video controller etc. etc.
Any way to get back operating normally? T.I.A.

You need to load the drivers for the devices from the driver disk or the net. The
laptop would have had a restore disk or partition to load a copy with those drivers
but a standard disk will not. You may have a hardware problem that caused the issue
in the first place, is it under warranty?

Adam, I dont have a restore disk, how would I obtain these drivers from the net? Also
not sure about the following, " laptop would have had a restore disk or partition
to load a copy with those drivers but a standard disk will not".

The laptop would have some way to restore to factory condition, be it a restore disk
(or a set of them) or an option at the very start of the boot process that accesses
a hidden partition on the hard drive. Check with the laptop's maker to see how you
access it or get a replacement restore disk. If it uses a partition you may have
wiped out your recovery option during the reinstall. The drivers for the devices
would be available from the laptop maker's website, download them from another computer
and copy them to a flash drive or CD if you have to. Your best bet to get this thing
running is getting the proper restore to factory condition but getting the drivers
should at least get it close.

download the drivers from this link.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D400&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
if you're confused about downloading... and you only want the computer to work, go
for the network drivers (both wireless and ethernet), video drivers, audio drivers,
and chipset drivers... there's a lot of drivers, some may not work, so I recommend
you to go to the dell site and look for "drivers & downloads" under support, and
put your Service Tag #, so that it'll give you the right drivers instead of downloading
a bunch of drivers, the service tag is under your computer on a sticker. Keep us
updated

Worth hitting F11 early in the boot sequence.
If Dell's restore partition (it will have had one) is still there (it might be) you
will be prompted to do a "factory reset" which will install all the correct drivers.
If only you'd read the manual before reinstalling Windows . . . but hindsight is
a wonderful thing :-)
