Every once in a while I will get a pop up stating my Virtuale Memory is low, 1.What is Virutal Memory 2. I just went into Control Panel and clicked on: Performance/System/Advanced then clicked on settings/advanced / performance then Virtual Memory, now my system reads 720mb for all drives, when I hit the change button, it reads as follows: Drive C: Page file size (mb) 720-1440 Space available-138446 mb Custom size is checked (green dot) same as above -720-1440 The next two circles are not checked off Then Total Page file size for all drives: Min. Allowed 2mb Recommended 765mb Currently allocated 720mb Should I change it to 765 mb, and should I check off the other 2 that I mentioned above that were not checked off I hope I am not confusing any one , cause I am totally confused, sometimes I do not understand Computer Terminology I am using Windows XP (home edition) Sp.3 Firefox, Sorry for the length of this, but would appreciate any and all help (in Layman's English, Please)

Perhaps an oversimplification, but virtual memory simply means when your physical
memory (installed modules) is low due to program(s) running then virtual memory temporarily
kicks in and steals from your hard drive.
A general rule of thumb is to set minimum to 1.5 times the amount of Ram installed
(i.e. 1024 Mb for 512 Mb Ram installed. Set in Paging File Size box.
Actually it is rare you need to do this unless you have minimal Ram installed and
you frequently run Ram intensive programs.
Hope that is understandable.

There are other reasons for getting the error message. How much real memory do you
have? Have you scanned for malware? The 1.5x rule is really nonsense, you need less
VM when you have more real memory, not more.

Hi. Just check "system managed size" to let Windows handle your page file. It works well and leaves no guess work.

Sorry, I wasn't around yesterday to read all the information that was sent, I am going to do it sometime today, and will let you all know what I decided to do or if I have further questions.

Mark: I followed your instructions, and checked what you told me, it is now reading "Total Paging for all Drives 765mb" is that right?

Yes, Carol. That sounds correct if you have 512MB of Ram installed. Just leave the setting to System Managed Size and you'll have no problems regardless of how much Ram you have installed. I've always used this setting and never had a problem. Hope this helps. Mark
