Not sure which one you may be referring to, but a couple I am aware of are:
Auslogics DiskDefrag
Piriform defraggler
and you can goggle for others if you feel you need a defrag program.

Hi Carol.
Yes as William has suggested I would recommend Defraggler.
I would also recommend CCleaner and Recuva from the same company, they are all free.
You can get all these in one go from FileHippo
What I wouldn't recommend is their forum. I've been a member for a few years and
they banned me recently. Not for posting anything illegal or offensive just for making
a comment, its one of the Mods is a power crazy bas***d.

Actually, Defraggler is a very interesting program. It can list every fragmented file
, tell you how many fragments there are and allows you to defrag individual files. It
also lets you click on any cluster and it will tell you what files are present.Perhaps
not a great deal of practical use but quite interesting and amusing. It does of course
defrag very quickly , either files or freespace or the whole disk.

re: Defrags - don't do it !

Carol,
Unless you are experiencing problems, please don't bother defragmenting your hard
disk. Even if you are experiencing issues, they're likely nothing to do with fragmentation.
In normal use, most XP systems will run happily for their lifetime without needing
to be defragmented and there's a small risk of screwing things up if you do it. Not
worth it !
Needing defragmentation is a hangover from older systems, and one perpetuated by
vendors of unnecessaary software, amongst others :-))

Thanks to all who replied , but some of you say you do use a defragger program and
others don't, may I ask why.
this is to Martin: you mentioned in your note "Unless you are experiencing problems,"
what problems are you talking about?

I do Not use a defrag program. I was simply trying to answer your question reference
someone mentioning a defrag program on this forum. To use or not to use is your choice,
but it is really not necessary except in very unusual situations.

Defragging your hard drive is only needed if file fragmentation is slowing the system
down, and XP has to be very very badly fragmented for it to have a real effect on
speed. Defrag venders will tell you it is a miracle cure for any slow system but
the truth is that XP rarely needs a defrag and when it does the built in defragger
is perfectly capable of handling the job.

Carol, the only problem that defragmentation might possibly fix is if your PC is
running desperately slowly.
My point is this:
1. If your PC is running fine, then don't defragment the HDD
2. If your PC is not running fine, then its very unlikely that fragmentation is the
cause - so its better to diagnose what specifically is wrong rather than trying a
blanket solution which is unlikely to work.
3. No particular harm in defragging, except that it can screw up badly (unlikely)
and adds to the wear on your HDD.
I hope this makes sense.

People defrag their disks, thinking it's critical to system performance, when in
reality it seldom provides a noticeable difference. Going through the mathematics
of the time it takes to retrieve a fragmented file versus a non-fragmented file reveals
that the difference is very small. A data file with a hundred fragments takes (on
average) about 0.3 seconds longer to load.

Indeed so - the time to load a file completelycan be very small. And a "trick" of
NTFS is that it allows the application to start reading the first fragment recovered,
before the rest is added. That significantly reduces the effective delay in accessing
the information in the file. Only writing is delayed until the whole file is recovered.

Just want to thank everyone again for all your help,
saved all the information that was given to me, and hopefully next week I will go
over all of it and decide if I want to d/l another defrager program or just do M.S.
once in a while, (or not at all.)
BTW someone mentioned ( sorry don't remember who,) I do have ccleaner, malware bites,
and avg.
