workgroup name resetting to mshome

I have 5 machines connected to a router 4 wired XPs and one wireless Vista basic laptop. The group name is THUNDERBIRD and they all work 95% of the time. Once in a blue moon one of the XP's goes off its trolley and resets its group name to MSHOME. This is getting old as I usually mangle things before I get it right again. Question, is it possible to edit where default group name MSHOME is stored to make it THUNDERBIRD?

Windows does not spontaneously change those settings on it's own, you need to figure
out what is causing the change. Do you have any applications loaded to help control
your network settings? Scanned for malware? Any kind of notices in the event viewer
coinciding with the change?

I use a couple spyware programs and use AVG behind the router. This has been going
on for a year or so and haven't been able to pinpoint any action that causes it.
What is an Event Viewer?

Windows doesn't just do weird things out of the blue?
Hum? Anyway I just wanted to fix the results not the problem as I'm probably not
smart enough solve this.

You may not find anyone else who has experienced this problem.

Start . . . Run . . . eventvwr.msc Click on System in the left pane and scour the items which show in the right pane, at about the time one of these mysterious changes took place, for any that look connected with your issue. Double clicking in the item usually reveals some further information. I'm afraid this may be a little tedious as there are lots off system events in normal usage - you might start with those with red crosses (the most severe) and go on to the warnings (yellow triangles).

I have seen it do this if you go through the "set up file sharing wizard" , to my knowledge, "mshome" is it's default so that your other computers will be the same, I experienced it recently sort of "resetting my LAN with a new router",with reserved IP add, just like you, I had to go change each machine to "workgroup" ..

Thanks the event viewer may help if it does this while I'm looking, I'll practice
with it so I'll know how to use it should the opportunity present itself.

If I read you right, one of the other machines could be the cause. Hum, that would
eliminate the laptop with vista as this has been happening before it was acquired.
This is the most obtuse thing as I only discover it when trying to access network
from it or one of the other machines tries it. That's why I thought of changing
the default on it.

Good plan - necessarily a bit random but I don't know another way to diagnose this.
