He must have done more - just removing SP2 would not have produced the symptoms you are seeing. Exactly how far do you get when the PC starts ? Can you boot into Safe Mode ? To do this, repeatedly press F8 when the PC is started up - until the menu appears. Then select Safe Mode and see what happens - be patient, Safe Mode can take a little while to sart up. Let us know what happens.

What was the "restore" process you referred to orginally ? I think that may now be your only option :-(

A factory restore from the disks will get the system booting again, provided it is
not a hardware problem. The uninstall might have just happened at the same time as
a piece of the system deciding to go kaput.

You do indeed need to use those restore disks you will lose all your own data and any programs you have installed. It is possible you have other issues with the PC, but they will be exposed when you try the restore disks. Let us know how you get on tomorrow.

I don't know the procedure for your specific PC but usually you put the CD in right at the beginning and the PC boots from the Restore Disk - it never goes near Windows, so you don't have to logon. No harm in trying this. Do you have a manual ? If not they are usually available from the manufacturer's website. If you can't find it there I expect someone here can help - might be worth starting a new thread if that's the information you need.

Its a public forum - you can say what you want to say ! Seriously, people who describe their problems accurately, without too much verbiage and respond to replies usually get good service from the many supporters of this forum :-) Conversely, people who are vague, are too lazy to make any sort of effort themselves, write pages of irrelevant stuff, already know the answer, miss out critical information or abuse those trying to help don't generally get much from posting here :-( That's life I suppose !

Hi Nichola.

Martin has given you a brief explanation of the startup procedure to WinXP.

I've had problems with service packs. Mine is WinXP 2002 SP2 so I download SP3 from
Microsoft and save it to a flash drive and install it. Now I've done 3, SP3 updates
over the past few weeks only the first time it worked as it should. I do a restart
and Windows never starts up. I have to start in Safe Mode and uninstall SP3 from
Control Panel Add/Remove.

As for the Repair option of the WinXP CD I can never get that to work it comes up
with invalid folder well the installation put it there.

I've recently bought WinXP 2002 with SP3 so I don't have that problem now.

If WinXP was a decent operating system you could save all your important files in
DOS without using Windows. NTFS has no true DOS.

If you have the WinXP CD then do a format and a fresh install. ALWAYS remember with
WinXP backup important files, you won't be warned when problems occur.
