Win XP reboots on startup to a black screen

I resently got an old Dell D620.
It has Win XP Pro.
When it plugged into the power supply it boots fine.
When it's on battery. (It has a new 7800Ah Battery now) It starts to Boot upto the
sweeping bar under the Win XP logo and it stops. Or it Boots to this same point and
then goes black, then reboots to a black screen with a plinking cursor.

Is this a memory problem, or bios, or sysboard issue.
Any help would be appreciated. I would like to be able to use the machine on battery
alone.
Thanks in advance.

First step - look in Event Viewer at the time of one of these crashes for any items
with a Red Cross. Double click the item to get more details.

What happens if you boot it while plugged in then switch to battery power? Does it
do the same thing if it goes into sleep on battery and tries to wake up? also you
say it is an old laptop but a new battery, why did you need to get a new battery?

Given that the problem only occurs when the battery is fitted there are two possible
causes, one being a faulty or incorrect type of battery pack, the second is a faulty
part of the laptop called the DC board (this is normally a plug in unit)
In explanation, as with all modern Laptops the so called "Battery" is in fact a composite
storage and processor based charge/discharge management system which talks digitally
to the laptop via the DC board , the DC board is the other half of the equation it
takes the incoming power from the power brick / or the battery and distributes it
to the laptop motherboard and also from the brick to the battery for recharging
To eliminate the battery pack the easy way is to test it in another known good same
model laptop
Cheers HC

Thanks for the replies.
So far I have switch batteries back to a 4400Mah battery. this is the standard battery.
Still have the same problem.
Win XP freezes in the middle of booting. Sweeping bar just freezes under the XP logo.
When the power supply is plugged in the machine boots fine, with any battery.
I searched the event log/
See a few :
Warning 11/1/2009 Userenv None 1517 System User
and before i removed the annoying " Windows Genuine " exe. I saw alot of Event
Errors Like.
X ERROR 10/22.2009 Crypt32 None 8 N/A User
X ERROR 10/22/2009 McLogEvent None 5004 System User
Any Ideas

Look on the dell site for a bios update to fix the battery issue. Thats the only
explanation i can come up with. I've had other issues from the battery because of
the bios. I had the inspiron 1501.

I Upgraded the BIOS to A08 from A05.
No change. Machine boots fine with power supply attached. On Battery alone, Charge
at 100%.
Machine boots up to post screen XP scroll then screen goes dark and hard drive light
stops fliclering.
Let machine sit in this state for 30 Minutes, before manually shutting it down. I'm
writting on it now.
I tried the HD in another D620. Booted fine from battery.
Mat just make this machine a home body PC.
Has anyone tried to put an ATG board in a regulat D620 with any success ?
Any thought ?

A random idea that just might work (probably not but worth a try) is to boot it on
AC power and rather than shut it down put it in hibernate. See if it can wake from
that without issue, if it works you would at least have a work around.
