Removing Norton/Symantec

This is a topic that is covered in countless forums and blogs, but none of them have
helped me, and I have been trying to figure out how to purge my system of this stuff
on and off for years. I'm not even sure how it got on my computer, unless one of
my buddies loaded it years ago, as I have no installation disc. I do however, have
asked some of my geek friends to help me over the years, and I wouldn't put it past
them to have loaded it to do me a "Favor". Now, I haven't been able to get rid of
it, and I have tried getting the Symantec uninstaller, but apparently, it is no longer
available for Norton 2002 and before.

This is basically what I still have on my computer:

Under all the Norton files in “Program Files”

SDOPTIONS.DLL
Nopdb.exe
Npcomsvr.dll
Nprotect.exe
Numisc.dll
S32krnll.dll
S32utill.dll
SDEXCEPTION.dll

In Registry:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
	SymAData.ActiveDataInfo
(This followed by at least one more with a similar name, then followed by)
	Symantec.AnalysisSnapIn

(This is a long, long list, going down to)

	Symantec.VolumeInfo.1

	(Then followed by)
	SymAppTracc.TaleWorks

(A few more with similar names, down to)

	SymSimpleLogger.SymSimpleLogger.1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
	Software
		Symantec
			Norton Utilities
				Norton Protection
					Drive C:
					Drive E:
				Speed Disc
		SymNRT
			LTM

HKEY_USERS
	.Default
		Software
			Symantec
				Norton Utilities
					Norton Unerase
						State Icons
	S-1-5-18
		Software
			Symantec
				Norton Utilities
					Norton Unerase
						State Icons

The ones left in "Program Files" won't let me delete them.
The ones in the registry, I don't know about,as I haven't yet tried to delete them.

Can anybody help me? Can you direct me to a website or something where somone else
could help me. I recently loaded AVAST on my computer and every time it opens it
gives me a message saying that Norton Antivirus is running, so it can't run some
of its stuff. This kind of thing is driving me nuts. Obviously, after all this
time, I'm at my wits end, and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
BoDill

There is a removal tool on the Symantec web site.

Their removal tools stop at 2003 versions. I have tracked down links to the previous version, clicked on them, and found a dead end with nothing. Don't forget, I have been screwing around with this for a long time, and I have a great respect for this forum. I need some serious help here!

Always helps to list what you have tried, otherwise we are playing 20 questions.
Have you tried removing it in Safe Mode?

Go here and download the removal tool for 2002 and earlier.

http://service1.symantec.com/support/sunset-c2002kb.nsf/0/73bf2b6c4e168da785256edd00478da6?opendocument

Just click on the blue arrow to the left of where it says "To download and run Rnav2003.exe"

You will then see a link to download the removal tool and it does work.

I had the same problem and found the solution by going to http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 for a free removal tool.

First, thank you to everyone who commented. Next, for the benefit of anyone else
struggling with this, a few comments;

1) I have two drives in my computer, C: and E:. Both of them had many instances
of both Norton and Symantec stuff. In the past, when I tried to delete stuff in
"Safe Mode", the stuff didn't disappear when I clicked on it, and hit "Delete", so
I gave up immediately. After reading one of the posts, I just sat down and deleted
everything on both drives whether it looked like it took or not (There were a LOT
of them, and a lot of duplicates).

2) I did this a couple of times, switching back and forth between "Safe Mode" and
a regular log on, checking for signs and results at the same time. Finally, I didn't
find any more listings for Norton or Symantec. Still, my AVAST came up with the
"Norton AntiVirus is running".

Finally, I tried one of the downloads listed to get me to "Rnav2003.exe" and followed
the directions. It only took a number of seconds to tell me "Norton" was removed,
so I restarted my PC and did NOT get a warning from AVAST. So far, I'm very happy
and VERY, VERY GRATEFUL.

Next, I'm assuming that whatever Avast was finding is gone, and it will work now.
This last restart did not get an error message.

That was for the other people who are having trouble uninstalling; now, for my benefit
again;

I DO want to know if there is something I can or should do about all the Symantec
and Norton stuff that is in my registry?

Again, Thank you VERY, VERY much!!

BoDill

If all you want is a PC that works, you can ignore all the un-needed entries in the Registry - they are harmless. If you also have an innate sense of tidiness, first take a backup of your Registry and also create a Restore Point. Then just delete them all. If you screw up your system (unlikely but not impossible) you can just restore the Registry Personally I wouldn't bother.

Martin M,

Thank you. I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but I'm inclined to got with, "ignore"
for now, although I hate to think I might have to start all over again sometime in
the future.

Removing all traces of an antivirus program from a system is hard just due to the
nature of how they interact with the OS, I would second Martin's option of just leaving
them. While you can delete unused registry keys there is really no need to despite
what some registry cleaners will tell you (I'll spare you that rant in full) for
the same reason doctors do not remove an appendix unless it is causing trouble.
