administrator permissions

Recently my computer started not allowing access to the external drives. I had AVG antivirus already installed, but somehow the program disappeared from the computer entirely. In any case, I installed Microsoft Security Essentials and scanned to find no bugs. However, I still get error messages when trying to use my external drives: "Administrator has denied permission to use . . . drive". I have tried the Intel Desktop Utility fix, but nothing has changed. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
